Japanese carriers moved south and sunk CL Marablehead. admiral English flagship. After this attack they withdraw.

Northern Sumatra

Japanese troops invaded Medan. Coastal guns damaged few ships, but troops landed combat ready and captured base by next day. It is believed that whole Sumatra is lost for allies.

Philippines

Demoralized and disorganized troops used to prepare counter offensive was attacked by Japanese troops. Allies were beaten and withdraw to Clark Field with heavy losses.

Southwest Pacific

Convoys from US slowly arrive to theater. Fighter and bomber squadrons arrived to Suva, but enemy lunched full scale invasion in this region. At first Carriers arrived near New Caledonia, causing panic because raid int this crucial moment could be deadly for convoys from US. Fortunately, day earlier HQ decided to send small destroyer scouting force north to Luganville in case of enemy invasion attack.

Japanese detected them and moved in pursuit. In the same time TF commander received information that enemy troops landed on Reef Island, south of Tualgi. Even though enemy bombs damaged his ships he moved against transport TF and attacked it.

Unfortunately carriers got his TF and for now 1 of his DD’s sunk and other one is heavy damaged with no chance to survive.

Also on 6th January signal intelligence decrypted info that Japan will invade Nonumea. Allies planned to hold this island as a main US base for this region and convoys were few days before unloading first part of reinforcements there.
It was clear that US should place line with clear signal, not a single step behind and Nonumea will be behind this line.

To defense of New Caledonia assigned US Navy Carriers, Cruisers and Battleships. US HQ hoped that they will have at least few days before Japanese invasion will start… But they were wrong. Japan invaded next day. There was not enough land forces, no naval forces ready and Japanese carriers were still operating in the zone. Plans will change… Line will be drawn once again.

Australian troops in Port Moresby are holding. Intelligence claims that enemy will try to reinforce Port Moresby using 144th Regiment. Submarine command in is on full alert, but faith that submarines will stop Japanese reinforcements is low.

Japanese invasion force unloaded fully in Nonumea. French heavy cannons damaged few ships but losses were minimal. On morning 8th scouting planes from Halsey’s Carrier Task Force showed above Japnese fleet and put AA crews on alert. Unfortunately real airstrike started afternoon.

Biggest targets Mutsu is burning but it is unknown how damaged he really is. Torpedo that hit Yamashiro made no real damage. There was no troop losses. All infantry units were already on the shore.
It was decided that second day attack will be canceled. TF Halsey will withdraw to base.

US Navy expects that enemy will strike Suva now, but CAP over island is getting stronger every day.


Norther Sumatra

Royal Navy was hit really hard in last month. To increase morale new operation was proposed. Raid of CVL Hermes against shipping on eastern coast of Sumatra. Air recon claimed that since 6th January there was no active task forces in region, but damaged transport ships were anchored in Medan. So it was decided that port attack against Medan will be CVL Hermes mission. Undetected British Task Force closed to western shores of Sumatra and lunched surprise attack.

Australian troops in Port Moresby are holding. It’s good to know that Intelligence is mostly correct. It’s very bad that it warns You day before invasion and You discover that Allied Naval recon is lame.

144th brigade landed in Port Moresby. I expect fall of port any day now.

China Air War

Last AVG victories create problem for Japanese HQ and probably few seppukus in China Theater Airforce HQ. All planes were directed against Changsha temporary AVG base. Japan committed almost dozens of light bombers Oscar and experimental Tojo fighters. AVG will not respond for now. Airbase is damaged.


Burma

Other AVG squadron once again moved to Rangoon to counter Japanese air raids. Unfortunately this time enemy committed more planes than earlier. Navy supported Army and prepared sweeping mission for Zero fighter planes. Those great fighters decimated AVG squadron and British Buffalo's. Rangoon will be without CAP for few moments.

Malaya

Singapore siege is coming to end. Swift Japanese offensive made this fortress easy pray.

Celebes

Japan lunched second invasion of Manado. Invasion force will arrive on 14th January. To avoid repeating adm. English raid, Japan moved two carrier groups in west and east of Celebes. There is big risk that they will try to attack Surabaya port, so ABDA command decided to reinforce CAP there. Both patrolling Carrier Task Forces met south of Celebes. All move around region is blocked and few transport ships become victim of this attack.

- I have bad news. We lost Enterprise.

After submarine attack against Enterprise and Saratoga there was two possibilities how to react and repair damaged ships. Spruance TF could go west to Cape Town or move back to US.

Finally it was decided that carriers will go to Auckland refuel there and then to the US. Halfway they will meet CV Yorktown. Lexington and Yorktown will create new Carrier Task Force, and damaged ships will continue they route to San Francisco.

To avoid dangerous strait blocked by submarines, Spruance decided to move south, around Tasmania. He didn’t expected that Japanese Carriers were also on the hunt. Both Task Forces were detected on very close range. And so the first carrier battle of this war started on January 19th 1942.

We can confirm that enemy lost CV Hiryu. CV Shokaku and CV Kaga might be very damaged but it is unknown what is their level of combat readiness.

I didn't expect that Japan will be aggressive on that level.
Almost in all critical places, Japan arrives day, maybe two before my reinforcements. In Palembang it was just a matter of day or two and I would had there troops size of division. Fortified, would require much more effort than one division my opponent in reality used.
In Noumea also two days more and marines could start landing.

At this battle I have lots of luck. TF met enemy at close range (that might be bad if Japan will decide to use BB's as surface hunting TF instead of retreat), so I had a chance to use TBD-1 Devastators with 4-5 range. Bigger distance would mean that my Carriers faces Kates and Vals and I can answer using only my dive bombers.

And when we are talking about AAR title... I know myself. I lost whole Kido Butai to allied Carriers in one battle (1942) so I expect nothing good:) I'm probably defeatist but with great love to counterattacks and ambushes

How easy tide of wars might change. At first it looked that enemy carriers were heavy damaged. Heavy fires on carriers mean nothing other then their quick death so far from home. Hawks at US Navy wanted bigger victory. Almost total. At Sydney there was TF with 3 CA’s and 7 DD’s, so HQ decided that they shall hunt damaged Japanese carriers.

At the same time fire on Lexington got bigger stopping all deck activity. It was decided that because enemy activity is lower it will be safe to send Lexington to Hobard to fight fires and move Saratoga further north. What a bad decision it was….

21st January started good. Cruisers TF detected enemy group and attacked.

And then Naval search mission reported first contacts. Two more TF were detected and what is worst, heavy fires info on Japanese carriers was a hoax. They were able to lunch aircraft and totally decimated cruiser TF. Once again hunter become pray.

And to add more to chaos Japan lunched attack on damaged Lexington. Land Fighter pilots by total mistake instead protecting both carrier TF’s protected only one and it wasn’t Lexington. Ship sunk in Hobart.

Allied HQ expects that campaign against Rangoon will start any day soon. To slow down enemy, retreating troops from Victoria Point cut off railway between Singapore and Bangkok (and also northern Thailand).

Almost quiet on all fronts. Almost.

Japanese forces are invading last allied bases on Borneo (Bandjermasin). On Celebes they captured Kendari. Manila is still holding, but I expected that it will be more successful defense.

In early days of war, Intelligence received messages that at least one division is preparing to attack Townsville. Kido Butai raid at the start of war might suggest that enemy will try to invade in this region. Most probably places are Darwin and Townsville.

So I observed enemy moves.
At first there were news that at least one division and heavy artillery is being moved to Babeldaob.
Other division was sent to Truk. It was possible that they are planning to invade Port Moresby only, but Japan is very aggressive and limiting itself only to New Guinea is not likely.

So what do we know about enemy troops.

38th Division was on the move to Babeldaob
21st Division was on the move to Truk and then detected near Salomons.
4th Division invaded Port Moresby with regiment from 55th Division.
I have no news about regiments from 48th Division only one was detected at Manila battle.

Imperial Guards were fighting Malayas
2 regiments of 2nd Division were seen on Sumatra
2 regiments from 55th Division were fighting in Singapore
2 regiments from 18th Division were fighting in Singapore

Lot’s of Regiments are still undetected. It’s not clear what will be next move of Japan. They prepared recon, so they know that I have strong force in Townsville, so he might decide to attack on the south or west.

If you think that the Japanese are coming, move the air units from the coastal bases. Use night and day naval searches, use Catalinas at night maybe with torpedoes on Naval attack. Minefields and PT Boats in small packages to slow the enemy TFs so they may be targeted during the day.

If he does attack the base, LRCAP the base as these will also show up during any Naval attacks but I don't know if they are tied to the bombers like any escorting fighters would be.

I will try. I moved most of plnes out of Townsville. On 2nd february Townsville was attacked by 40 Zero planes and 27 Nells. Problem is with mines. I don't have them. Pools are empty. I sent few subs to guard great reef but I don't have to much luck with them.

And I was right with Java invasion. IJA 33rd Division landed at Djoekarta.
