[1.07.01] Help with 5K screen

Post by Solaristics »

Hi, I just bought the game today but I've been struggling to find a resolution + scaling combination that has large enough text but isn't too blurry on my 5K screen. The best solution I've found so far is to run it in windowed mode at 4K and use 200% scaling. I'm not sure about that yet as I've been playing with different settings for an hour and a half and I think my eyes are now strained from trying to read small/blurry text. I'm wondering if there is a better solution? How stable is the windowed mode since I know it isn't supported?

200% dpi shouldn't be blurry for you. And it should make everything readable, unless you have a very very small screen.

best wishes,

Thanks for the response. After tinkering around with this for a while the biggest issue with the text is the size of the research tree text and the progress tree(?) text - these are very small. There are a couple of other instances of very small text, e.g. the processing box that pops up, but they aren't major. My screen is 27" and I'm at 200% dpi and I've experimented with native 5K (and also desktop settings at 4K just to compare).

Just to be sure: Are you at 200% Windows settings DPI or 200% Prefs Tab Shadow Empire setting?

I'm set to 200% DPI in the Shadow Empire preference screen.

Hi, it seems like you are unable to help me with this further. Would it be possible to let me know which fonts are used in the research tree and progress tree (?) so I can experiment with finding something easier to read?

Sorry. And have you tried just using a lower screen resolution?
Changing the font (by renaming tricks) will not fix your problem and will cause other issues.

Thing is that 200% DPI Prefs on 4K resolution on 27 inch monitor should be sharp and big enough. Do you have any special eye sight problems?

Also feel free to send a screenshot to vic@vrdesigns.net just in case I am missing something obvious.

Hi, thanks, I've tried various res/dpi combos and 3840 x 2160 (I think that's the one I've settled on) @200% seems to be the best compromise except that it leaves the text on the research tree too small. I don't have this problem with other games (even ones where other people complain about font sizes!) it just seems that there is a lot of small text crammed onto the research screen. Ever thought of breaking the tree up over two pages?

Good idea...I cannot read the text on the research screen...much too small still occupies the entire screen (34 inch monitor--2560x1440)..and I do have eye problems (detached retina leading to loss of 25% vision in left eye and all details) (right eye okay but gets tired looking at such small print).

Hi, I'm sending 3 screenshots at 5120x2880, 4096x2304, and 3840x2160 (all at 200 dpi as set within SE). I've tried lower res but they aren't sharp enough. FYI, I measured the height of the capital letter M at 3840 and it was 2.5mm high in-game on the research screen. On my desktop now, which is set to the same res and dpi, M is 3mm high.

Screenies look as I intended them at those resolutions. So only option left to you is playing at lower screen resolutions. It aint a bad idea to redo that screen to spread the tech out over multiple screens.

OK, thanks for looking into it. If you do rework the tech screen I'd also suggest doing the same for the progress tree screen (not sure what it's called, the one with the micro images of the cards for meritocracy, fist etc feats).

Just to add, it would be great if the combat results detail screen could be more readable too as there is plenty of unused space and a very small font.
