Cav,

Are you on the Game main menu screen? What button are you clicking on this screen?

What version of the game as you running?

Cary,

Thanks for the response.

I could not get even to this screen. It was the main start the game screen, I was just clicking the button that says play the game the big wide one at the bottom. The game sort of starts for about 2 secs but then reverts back to the initial screen.

We are both using the latest version.

Here is a very odd thing. If I turn off in windows 10 dictation software that comes on at startup, the game is loading OK at the moment. This is such a weird thing, the software is not on or in dictation mode.

I will post it again if I have further trouble.

Cav,

Here's what I suggest. Rather than use the "War in the West (Game Menu)", use the "War in the West (Quick Start)", which will take you straight to the game. I never use the Game Menu.

You also can pin the Quick Start to your Windows tool bar. The EXE file usually is located at "C:\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the West\WarInTheWest.exe".

And one other suggestion: unless you enjoy the opening videos, change the name of the Video folder to "Video.XXX" and then they won't play. I delete the folder myself, and also the Sounds folder, because I never use either.

Cavalry Corp,
Apologize for reviving this thread but you gave me an idea. I had the same problem. About half a year before game worked fine. Then I didn't play it for several months during which I enabled Windows Speech Recognition. Today I tried to start the game and it behaved as you described.
For me this solution worked: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4852428
but it seems probable that Speech Recognition triggered the problem.

Speech recognition is indeed the problem on Win 10 in both a standard install or a Steam install. The easiest way I found to discover all the places where it needs to be turned off is to just hit the Windows command panel and search for "Speech". This should have been patched a long time ago.
