Fog of War?

Post by ncc1701e »

The advantage of bringing a boardgame to a digital version is that all CRT resolution tables or LOS calculation is done for you. As such, did you introduce fog of war?

Meaning if our units do not have an LOS on an enemy unit, this enemy unit won't appear.

This is adding a lot of tactical depth imo.

Thanks

The game should not be seen as a simulation but as a boardgame. In short, forget ASL and welcome to the world of Valor & Victory boardgame.
No Fog of War.
I know, it can seem frustrating at first but you quickly forget because going headlong comes at a high price and you have to build a progression plan to win.

Do you know for sure that there will be no fog of war in the computer version? Are you testing the game? If there is no fog of war I will not be buying it.

Tactical games are my passion and you can believe me when I tell you that you are going to deprive yourself of a high intensity tactical game.

Each to their own. For me if a wargame has no FOW, then it lacks the kind of intensity that surprise and tension supplies.

Interested in the response from the developers, yobowargames. Yes, V&V was a boardgame but this is a computer wargame where various degrees of FOW can and should be implemented. As game options. Either upon release or later as a game enhancement.

Fog of war is not implemented in the boardgame and I do not believe the developer will be introducing it, i.e. changing the rules of the game. The intention is to build upon the board game (which is alive and ongoing) and translate it to the digital world.

"Can and should" is a relative term - for you, perhaps. For me? Not at all, the game does not need this, it is not intended as a simulation of the surprises of war at such a granular level. Many many many wargames do not have Fog of war, especially the board wargames. There are a few exceptions, for instance the block wargames (Sekigahara, Hammer of the Scots etc.) or games like Stories: Red Storm and others.

"To build upon" means some additional enhancements can and should be considered for the digital version, like AI for a computer opponent; else, you can play V&V on Vassal and be happy about it. And again, game options. That means you can choose to not enable any game options that you do not care for. You can do what you want.

And you are not yobowargames responding to customer requests for FOW. Again, we're interested in learning what the developers have to say. Their official response will determine if some customers buy the game despite no FOW or don't buy the game for lack of FOW game options.

I have thought seriously about putting FOW in the game. For now, it's not in but I have it on the feature request list. I always knew this would be a request from some players.

My thoughts are to make it an optional option.

Making it optional sounds like a good decision to me. Everybody happy.

Will there be an AI upon release?

Yes, there will be AI. Likely that will be the main focus of Beta is to improve AI and scenario balance.

I on the other hand strongly disagree with FOW. It radically changes the flow of the game. If it will be introduced in custom scenarios, sure...

Well, this is purely speculation, mind you, but if it were to be added, I can see it being an option.

The questions we'd have to answer would be regarding the impact on the AI, and balance in official scenarios.
