Turn 34 + Turn 35
6-20 December 1940

It's another slow turn as the countdown to Barbarossa begins. The Italians are still battling to clear East Africa, but there own forces need a rest.

The British make a recce toward Tobruk. Not much is happening in Greece pending the arrival of the Germans.

In China I get my forces into position for the counter attack in the north. I need a break in the weather now.

Turn 36 + Turn 37
3-17 January 1941

The stupidest attack in history continues. A Greek army and garrison are destroyed as the Axis try and bring this fiasco to as quick a conclusion as possible.

Turn 38 + Turn 39
1-14 February 1941

I am really struggling with the mechanics of this game. My Japanese forces can move nowhere in the south. So the same attack happens over and over, whereby I almost destroy a Chinese unit - but it retreats and I can't move in. So I try and make something happen in the north but the odds are rubbish - I guess the weather doesn't help here. There is no point just sitting around waiting for the Chinese to get so strong they pick me off. So I try and force the issue.

Terauchi orders XXII Corps to advance - where it is in danger of being picked off by at least four Chinese units - but the Japanese need to get numbers against the Chinese so its probably worth a try, but I suspect I know the outcome in advance.

Similar issues in Europe. I can't proceed any further with the Germans in Greece and so, in desperation the Germans declare war on Yugoslavia. Maybe I can get that pesky Greek army from the north! Triffic Casus Belli innit?

Ritter von Leeb's forces fall short of Belgrade....

The one bright bit of news is that my Italian submarine pickets - set up to guard against reinforcement of Greece - almost destroys a British battle squadron. But it survives with one point to spare....

In East Africa Graziani's forces need a breather. Sadly I don't think they are going to be strong enough to finish the job here before reinforcement arrives...

And I guess that effectively ends the game as a contest. February 1941 and the USSR prepares for war.

Turn 40 + Turn 41
1-14 March 1941

Weather hampers attempts to take Athens but the Greek Army guarding the Bulgarian front is destroyed.

A resumption of the war in East Africa is underway but the Italians just can't hurt the Saffers.

There is a breakthrough of sorts in the north with Terauchi with the Chinese having taken the bait offered by XXII Corps but failing to do much damage. In return the Japanese finally destroy a Chinese army.

Annexing Lithuania bumps USSR mob up considerably, as does (to a lesser extent) DOWing Yugo, I believe. In addition, every Axis DOW has a small effect, I believe 2-4%. However, even with that, it is surprising that USSR was able to DOW in March 1941. Did you over- or under-garrison in Prussia and Poland?

Turn 42 + Turn 43
29 March - 11 April 1941

Further progress - albeit slow - is made in the north. I will take slow because its better than what was happening...

Terauchi and Itagachi hope to split the two Chinese army groups and roll them from the North.... we shall see.

The Chinese are looking more menacing further south, but I think (hope) I have enough to hold with them.

Turn 42 + Turn 43
29 March - 11 April 1941

Rain stops play in East Africa, but Greece finally falls to the New Roman Empire....

In the East the Soviets don't run with all their units and destroy a bomber formation. I manage to destroy some mechanised and infantry units so I at least got some compensation for the lost bombers - but that is expensive...

Turn 44 + Turn 45
25 April - 9 May 1941

Once again the Japanese just can't hit the Chinese hard enough. Plenty of hits but not close to destroying anything.

In East Africa the South Africans arrive en masse and so I have little choice but to retreat.

In the USSR Army Group North is a basket case. But in the south I've at least got some degree of concentration going.
