The Soviet Army continues its successful offensive between Rostov and Stalingrad. Stavka is making plans to continue its offensive in the spring and summer of 1943 all along the frontline against Army Group Center and Army Group South.

If the next turn is mud, the German offensive (and with that the war) is over. Th eastern pincer seems burned out, and by the time the mud clears out, there will be a solid line of infantry corps in front of the western pincer.

He also has to solve the southern problem, as the last turn showed that the Axis Allies cannot hold the line by themselves. The 30 kilometre breakthrough southeast of Voroshilovgrad is a worrying example of what is to come. With some rest, refit and resupply the southern offensive is going to roll.

EDIT:
- When is the Spring 43 mud season likely to finish?
- Somewhere between "now" and July the SS Panzergrenadier divisions historically convert to Panzer divisions. Is this conversion done on the board, or do they need to withdraw for a while to refit?

The Spring 43 mud season starts with Turn 94 and lasts 6 turns, although since we are playing random weather some weather zones could get less than 6 turns of mud.

If the Axis manages to capture Moscow it could still make for an interesting summer of 1943.

Not sure if the SS Panzergrenadier Divisions are withdrawn before changing to Panzer Divisions.

His supply situation must be dire for 2 panzer divisions to surrender without fighting....as well for you to win 3x mud battles...its why you shouldnt drive panzer armies off into the middle of no-where...it works for awhile then breaksdown. 3x mobile divisions destroyed will end his ability to make the pocket...those divisions will be worthless for months not to mention take all his replacements for like 2-3 weeks.

Soviet Turn 98

Post by Grognard1812 »

Turn 98 was also a mud turn in all the Soviet Weather Zones. Air recon shows a worrisome build-up of German mobile divisions just Southeast of Moscow - units that had moved there from the eastern salient.

Situation in the Moscow area end of turn.

Soviet Turn 99

Post by Grognard1812 »

Spring arrived early in the North Soviet weather zone, while the other two Soviet weather zones were mud.

The SS Panzer Corps changed its direction of attack, attacking South while the eastern pincer evacuated the salient and attacked with massed Panzer units northwards just east of Moscow. The two pincers almost met just east of Moscow which would have resulted in a very large pocket in the Moscow area. Massed German Panzer and Motorized units are always dangerous even in 1943 as they can attack on a very narrow front.

Situation start of turn 99 in the Moscow area.

All the rail links to Moscow were cut off by the Panzer spearheads. Moscow is lost, time to save as many units as possible from being encircled.

Situation in the Moscow area, end of turn.

A strong garrison was left in Moscow, but the rest of the Soviet units were retreated further east to avoid a large pocket from being formed. No point in losing over 40 Soviet Divisions in a Soviet equivalent to what happened to the German Sixth Army in Stalingrad. As almost all the German Panzer, PzGr and Motorized divisions are in the Moscow area it would have been very difficult to prevent a large pocket from being formed around Moscow.
