Dot bases

Post by HansBolter »

Just curious if anyone has ever thought, or attempted to build every Dot base on the map to a minimum level one port or airfield?

I'm playing The Long Road to Tokyo, which lasts till '48. I'm thinking I might have time to pull it off. Around March of '42 I got the idea to commit to the attempt to build up every last Dot base on the map before the game ends.

Update to follow in a few months of real time.

US probably has the engineering units to pull it off (soooo many Construction units!), but that's alot of clicking! Good luck with that!

OK, but that would be "long road" to Tokyo. I spend a lot of time on planning what my engineers are doing. I don't want them idle, but I prefer to use them at the most important places. I like to have places that my ships can rearm at, in as many places as possible, so that you can keep your ships fighting, versus traveling across the ocean in search of ammo. I guess you will need to keep them working until 1948. So I guess that would help with post-war economic recovery. [:)]

I think Hans is not thinking about war aims here, but just seeing how far the engineering power will go (with symbols at every former dot base to show it is no longer so). I have thought about that but don't have the patience for it. I have excess engineers building bases that have a good VP multiplier even though I don't need the VPs nor high level bases in that area. But I can leave them there for months without having to arrange an amphib TF to transfer them to another base as soon as they build a level! [:)]

Just use the LSTs, LSMs, and LCIs to move the engineers with supplies as are needed to where they are needed.

To BBfanboy,
Yes, I understand that Hans would do that for fun, releasing the inner Construction Engineer in him. In a similar vein, I have modded a scenario to add a US Heavy Construction Brigade, with a very large numbers of Engineers & Engineer Vehicles. Just to see what it could accomplish. I even created a Construction Engineer as the Leader, using a historical civilian Engineer personality. So I get it.

Random dot base, somewhere in SE Pacific Area

Sapper Bloggs: what are we building this airstrip for again?
Corporal Plant: the Generals want to see little flags on their maps, and the little flag doesn’t appear until we finish this fighter strip
Sapper Bloggs: fair enough, let’s take our time cos the fishing here is pretty good
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

Guys I'm probably on something like my 30th or maybe even my 40th game...who really keeps count.

At this point I'm doing things just for entertainment and the novelty of doing something different.

And, yea, to see the little flags cover the map. [:D][:D][:D]

I gave it a shot - I had amphib TFs using old xAPs and xAKs shuttling CBs and construction regiments/brigades around in "hit squads". Fed supplies by amphib TFS hauling stuff from older 'hub' bases that the war had left behind. I also had the US 8th airforce and Tiger Force engineers working backwards from Korea into Manchuria, along with Chinese and Soviet infantry units - there are a lot of points available there.

I think it can be done - particularly if by 1945 you are dropping large supply TFs straight into Shanghai, and Hongkong -Canton.

And roads. Some technically proficient players figured out a way to do this using a hex editor. They limited themselves to one segment (center of hex to edge of hex) per month for each road and rail. Then they modded the map section artwork to match. Both players had to exchange the files with their changes so they could both update their mod on the same turn. I think they were doing the RHS mod. So technically it was hacking the game code - but just for that specific purpose and not destroying the game in the process.

IIRC there are no bases, even dot ones, in Tibet so Katmandu is as close as he is gonna get to air service at his doorstep. [;)]

At least in DaBabes there are some very big US construction units. To add, they are bit pain in butt to transport where one might need them.

Any passengers flying to Katmandu, Nepal, then going to Lhasa, Tibet, would have to cross the Himalayas. It would probably be easier to fly into China somewhere.

At least you can fly a strike from Xianggelila. [8D]
