Sardaukar's 5th Grand Campaign (IJ Hard AI)

Post by Sardaukar »

Hello all!

This will be again based on DaBabes Lite Scen 26 (my favourite, now bit edited).

AI: Hard

Dec 7 surprise on, 1-day turn first day only, after that, 2-day turns

Edits:

- reduced late war E-class IJN ship ASW capability a notch (dreaded Super-E-problem). They were still pretty deadly, those Type 2 DCs pack a wallop.

- did just adjustment to Argonaut so it can lay mines after Dec 1942

- took off end dates of some mines (mainly so that Dutch minelayers can be used bit later)

House rules for myself:

- Restricted units must pay PP to cross national borders (permanently restricted of course cannot ever), this is mainly for SE Asia and China.

- No Fortress Sumatra or Java (Java can be reinforced only with supplies or HQs, Air HQ from Singapore allowed). Otherwise can only be defended with units in hand.

- No Fortress Rangoon, withdrawal from Burma in orderly fashion to India. No reinforcing Burma in 1942, diverting units in TFs destined to Singapore only to India.

- No 4E bomber Naval attacks below 6000 ft before 1943 and then 1000 ft (while skip bombing was invented using B-17s, it can be too powerful).

- No 2E bomber Naval attacks below 1000 ft, 100 ft skip bombing/strafing restricted to Attack Bombers only and (some) Fighter Bombers in Naval attacks. Fighters can strafe in land attacks.

I will probably come up with more after I see how this goes...

Add: fighters on CAP/Sweep can only use their "best MVR band" altitude or lower, so no strato-sweeps. This mainly means 15k altitude for most, sometimes 10k.

For new players, I want to explain how my orders process goes:

- since at start game shows Hawaii, check ships and planes there, adjust ship repairs, create TFs if needed, adjust CAP levels and %, adjust missions etc. Send PT boats to pool, since they are not much use in PH.

- check the Ops report for reinforcements, check them and adjust them appropriately.

- I give orders counter-clockwise, starting Alaska, Canada, US West Coast, East Coast, Panama area, South Pac islands, NZ, Solomons, Papua-New Guinea, Australia, Dutch East Indies. Malaya, Burma, India and China last. I can use sort of "mass commands" with choosing base and clicking Show bases under same HQ. This way I can immediately set e.g. all bases in West Coast to start building up AFs and Ports. Can access bases also by pressing B.

But since I used option at start to automatically start construction in all bases, now I have to turn bases off. Mainly those that will be captured by enemy or those with supply issues (mainly China). You definitely want to have West Coast, Canada, India and Soviet Union start to build up immediately.

- next comes sub operarions. Press S for active ships. Filtering first by class (SS) and then by Sys damage, I can then assign those subs to repairs (sometimes having to withdraw them to rear bases). Then setting sub patrols. Patrol zone and then using Patrol around the hex really eases that process. It is pain to set all manually.

- then surface units, again checking for damage and needed repairs. Then setting different TFs.

- then comes air units by area.

- then land units

After deciding what you actually want to do next, using same procedure all the time cuts the real time you use to give orders. first turn is tough even for Allies, but remember, you don't have to do all same time.

Some Strategic hints:

- India, NZ and Australia need fuel. Fuel is mainly available from Abadan, US West Coast and Dutch East Indies. Set your tankers to evacuate fuel from DEI to Australia. Get tankers to Abadan and set them to dump fuel into Karachi (it'll move where needed). You get some fuel in Panama and Cape Town too. But for Australia and NZ, you have to use US West Coast. Los Angeles is my main fuel source for Pacific and Australia/NZ. Fuel is life, since it's used by industry to convert it to supply, not only used by ships. As Allies, don't worry about oil at all. If really interested in it, ship some from Palembang to Australia (Perth).

- for first 6 months or more, you are fighting defensively, so decide where to make your stand and where to withdrawal. There is also cost/benefit decisions about forward defence. But there are places you should not lose.

- don't get into Carrier battle with Kido Butai in early war, they are just better early on and there is more of them than you can muster in numbers. Wait until you can match them in numbers, but even losing all your starting CVs is not a total disaster, you have plenty more coming...it just makes your life lot more difficult for a while. Hit him where KB is not.

Was very lucky, didn't lose single capital ship, though many are quite hammered (Repulse and Pow will most likely make it too):

Six torp hits on Nevada and only 80 float damage? Five torp hits on Repulse and still afloat? Must be some FOW on those claimed hits or exceptionally good (for the Allies) die rolls for damage.

I was sure that there would be 2-3 BBs gone, but no...lucky distribution and lucky dice.

USN BB force is about done for an year or so, though...

Took me about 4 hrs to micromanage Allied turn, this time I wanted to do everything once! And still missed something, but there is another turn, this time 2-day one. [8D]

Some bloody air battles...and Kido Butai is still attacking PH! Lots of sub action too, but no results either way, so will omit them mostly.

Good thing that I noticed before that in Philippines, in couple of fighter units, best pilots were put in group reserve.. I guess weekend in O-club had stressed them.. [:'(] They gave as good as they got and often better.

Air to Air losses for 2 days were Allies 32, Japan 71. so good going!

Looks like KB is suffering some losses of good pilots - a good thing for your side. [:)]
A bit surprised another airfield strike was in the cards but no port strike to finish off the BBs. Must have been programmed that way - perhaps because flak from ships was deemed too dangerous?

Malaya defensive plan. (oh how I'd love to change some commanders there, but I need about 750 PP to release 22nd and 23rd AUS brigades of 8th AUS Div and changing those (Percival and sh*tty Corps CO) costs arm and leg). Percival alone 150PP...Heath 125PP...and Cassel is only real improvement, but I'll do it later since Cassel makes real difference.

Burma defensive lines and retreat routes. I could easily stop AI in Pegu/Moulmein by pouring assets there, but it'd be a boring game, breaking AI. Thus no extra unit's committed to Burma.
Amusingly, trying to save Burmese battalions, since they are good for garrison duty later in war...about only thing they are good for...never got their morale go up from original 20 in 3 years of game...
