The Japanese losses were mostly disablements and fatigue remains low, so the attacks will continue. Port damage at Wenchow is significant, so if we have to switch to bombardment for a few days, it won't be possible for the Chinese to re-entrench. An AKE at Taihoku is rearming the battleships, so they will participate again. (Of course, I could have sent them to Shanghai to rearm, but recent partisan damage has the port a mess!)

BB Arizona bombarded Dutch Harbor. Nagumo unleashed another carrier attack on Lae, sinking a PT in port and otherwise trashing the place.

With forts reduced at Clark Field, a shock attack was ordered -

Now to reduce the overstack! Tanks and 38 Div will retire to Lingayen; the tanks will be back; 38 Div will begin operations in Borneo to secure more oil. 4 Div and 16 Div, still at Manila, will move to Clark after 38 Div withdraws, then advance on Bataan. As elements of 1 Div are bought out from Manchukuo, they will assemble on Luzon making 3 full divisions available for the assault on Bataan. There is no hurry.

Movements in China for the first two days of January are shown in the map below. A meeting engagement has developed at Pucheng, where 22 Div and a Chinese corps have arrived simultaneously.



Changsha has been reinforced by the Chinese, with AV now over 2200, and they continue to bombard.

A sub was lost to mines in Cold Bay Harbor. I think he has an AKE there, because BB Arizona was back for another bombardment of Dutch Harbor. And the Brits bombarded Tavoy again, as well.

Japanese carriers hit Midway Island and a task force there, while passing by going to the North Pacific; heavy damage to 3 ships and moderate damage to Midway.

With port damage at Wenchow still over 40, this force is ordered to bombard for a day (or 2) and repair disablements before attempting a shock attack.

The meeting engagement at Pucheng turned out to be a Chinese HQ against our 22 Div. You'll never guess who won!!
The HQ was brushed aside (and retreated west), and 22 Div will proceed SW to cut the final hex of the Chinese corps to the south.

A battle west of Chengchow resulted in heavy loss to the Chinese force which retreated west from clear terrain into rough -

Supply at Dutch Harbor is critical. The defenders were attacked today at 1-to-1. A battalion at Adak has loaded transports, but can't get there to reinforce in only one day. Supplies (though VERY limited) are being flown in from Amchitka. Carrier Division ONE is still several days away. If the 24 Rgt(+) can hang on one more day, the situation my be recoverable.

Out in the Aleutians, the Japanese force at Dutch Harbor is out of supply, and the US holds the base. Two Glen-subs are between Cold Bay and Dutch Harbor, and search shows no Allied naval forces in the area. (That doesn't mean they aren't there.) A battalion will attempt to reinforce tomorrow with an additional 1000 supplies on a PB. Carrier Division ONE (2 CV, 2 CVL) will speed to within 7 hexes of Dutch Harbor, while the battleship TF is left behind to refuel. If the reinforcement is successful, we will attempt to evacuate 2 Recon Rgt from Dutch Harbor so that it can be rebuilt.

The US subs suddenly have functioning torpedoes!! An empty xAP took 3 and sank at Dutch Harbor; an xAK loading at Umnak took some and also sank; another xAK at Umnak is heavily damaged and must unload before trying to move. CL Kitikami TF bombarded Dutch Harbor before retiring to Adak, and had 1 whole port hit! The Allied attack at Dutch Harbor was again unsuccessful, and more supply is being loaded elsewhere for Dutch. A BB TF is also headed that way. The carriers 7 hexes away did not attack and are getting short on fuel. A small AO is nearby to replenish, though it's unlikely they will be topped off. THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS ARE A LONG, LONG WAY FROM OMINATO!

Had he attempted to land at Mergui (to flank Tavoy) instead of Victoria Point, he would have been successful. I can't tell from the casualties shown the size of the invasion force, but it seems to be larger than a battalion. Maybe I'll get some intel on that in the next email exchange of turns, lol. In the meantime, a Japanese battalion at Victoria Point is loading on transports for the invasion at Port Blair, while aviation support units are moving up from Alor Star already loaded.
