Should I play WITE or WITW first to get ready?

Post by Delaware »

Hi
I own WITE and WITW both but never got into them for really time commitment reasons. I now have time. Should I learn WITE or WITW first in preparation for WITE2? Or just wait for WITE2 and dig in?

Push some units around in WitE, conduct some attacks, get a feel for the interface. Beyond that it seems WitE2 is coming out so soon you would be better served by waiting for that game before diving into any details.

Possibly depends on what interests you most historically. I also own both games and decided to start with WITW, as I have an interest in the Mediterranean Theatre. So I have started with Sicily. I have also ordered WITE 2 with hardcover manual. I feel that WITW will give me a grounding before WITE 2, see my other post on this at http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4977320

IMO something that is more important then playing either WITE or WITW to get ready for WITE2 is to be familuar with the actuall history of this conflict...The more the better [:)]
Having a firm understanding of how things played out in RL and why will greatley improve the enjoyment one gets from playing this game. I don't know if you already do have a good knowledge of this conflict or not but if you do not i would highely recomend to start reading up on this conflict in preparation for the release...This would be time better spent compared to playing either WITE or WITW imo...

The number of books out there are obviously endless but a decent place to start might be...

David Stahel 1941,42 books:

- Barbarossa
- Kiev
- Typhoon
- Moscow
- Retreat from Moscow

For the german side of things and...

David Glantz:

- Stumbaling colussos
- Colussos reborn

For the russian side.

Absolutely agree with this. As I linked in my previous post to a similar question, having a good general knowledge, and above all an interest (if not obsession...) is a good starting point.

I also like to read 'proper' history books on the specific area of interest before and while I'm recreating the historical situation (aka Game). While currently playing the Italian campaign in WITW, I'm reading several books on North Africa, and Mediterranean Theatre including Rick Atkinson's book The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944 (The Liberation Trilogy, 2) which I think is excellent, very readable and really adds to the enjoyment of the 'playing' experience.

Why don't you start with WitE now since you already own it? There could be no harm.

I am in the same boat and despite picking up WITE on sale a long time back I never really tackled learning it as I got intimidated with the scale and UI on opening it up though I love the subject matter.

I can 100% recommend the series of tutorials for the game on You Tube by Strategy Gaming Dojo. There are 12 and the explanations of the game mechanics are incredibly clear. It has been a revelation, so much so that I ordered WITE2 after watching only the first couple of episodes.

Yes I agree with.
Apart from that, use the time and read/learn everything you can about WitE2.

Agree completely. Although I was hoping to get in on the Beta, there is so much to take in, even before playing the introductory scenario. I am trying to use my time (what I have after my "better half" keeps distracting me with "other stuff") to s-l-o-w-l-y go over the manual, freeze the available videos, to absorb as much as I can before having the game at hand. It's a lot!

Either and both will help, just realize some of what you learn will also have to be re-learned with the new rules and systems.

I agree with devoncop:

Strategy Gaming Dojo has a really good manner of presenting. While I enjoy XTRG, I actually wish Strategy Gaming Dojo would present this game too. When it comes to a complex and time consuming game like this - different presentation styles cant hurt to help a bigger audience grasp some of the concepts.

My suggestion is to start with WitW.
The air campaign as well as the whole logistics handling is much closer to WitE2 then the original one. However, from a strategy and planning point-of-view nothing beats the WitE experience.

Now that you guys have played, is WITW a close analog to the WITE2 system or are there substantial differences/tweaks?

Was thinking about buying but really don’t know the system yet and I own WITW

its closer simply as WiTW is the more direct ancestor of WiTE2, so some of the supply/logistics approach is related.

One suggestion is to have a look at the manual (either the full one or the sections that Erik posted), in the player's notes there is a short table of the really big differences WiTW-E2 that might help and equally a read of the rest of that section may give you a feel for how WiTE2 plays out.

Thing is, I'm biased, I still firmly think that WiTW is a good fun game in its own right with a different scale and overall feel to WiTE1/2 simply due to the lower number of units and the very distinct phases.

I would go straight to WITE2 if that is your ultimate goal to play Eastern Front game. I wouldn't waste brain cells learning something in the two other games (WITE1 & WITW) just to have to unlearn them for WITE2. Plus you have a ton of people learning the game here now that would gladly help you along in WITE2. But that is just me and I have played the other two but 100% prefer WITE2 over WITE1 and WITW hands down.
