Is there any disadvantage to USSR breaking the treaty and attacking Japan (other than the second front)?

I assume not (other than the second front) because everyone is at war. I would imagine there may be a penalty if the Soviets tried it pre the USA entering - but then again I could never imagine that happening - unless perhaps the Germans couldn’t take France. But then the gameis over anyway.

Russian Early attack on Japan

Post by smckechnie »

If Russia attacks Japan before the entry of the US into the war, there is a pretty severe hit to US mobilization. In fact, if you do it, I would not plan for the US to enter the war until mid 42.

If Russia is doing well against the Germans in 40/41, then it might be an ok move, but most of the time the Russians need every unit they can get on the Eastern Front.

The Soviets continue their attack in Manchuria.

The hastily formed Army Group Homma (with just three armies) races to the scene - and I have to leave my border troops to try and hold up the Soviet advance before they reach Harbin.

Meanwhile, attempts to take Ichang stall when my Umezuu's forces can't enter the space vacated by a destroyed Chinese army. The remaining corps east of the river remains stubbornly unwilling to die....

In the Soviet Union, things get much, much tougher, The only successes are the taking of Tallin and the destruction of a corps south of Stalingrad... I race reinforcements to the scene as best I can.

In both the North and East the Italians are about to be kicked out of Africa...

China is pretty static. It's like a couple of drunken heavyweights that traded blow after blow but neither can knock the other out.

But the Japanese take Batavia - Huzzah!! And finally get rid of Wainright from Corregidor.

In the USSR, things remain difficult in the north and the centre. The Finns are coming in for some considerable pressure.

But there is some better news in the south where the oil fields west of Grozny have fallen, and also a precarious hold is had on Stalingrad.

In northern China a Chinese light tank gets overly curious around Paotow and is rudely despatched from this world into the next.

To the east, Homma's forces continue to hold the line - but there are two weak garrisons in that line. However Homma is loathe to call up his only reserve unit - 3rd Army, based in Mukden at this stage.

The main focus for Japan in China remains the areas around Kweichow and Ichang. The British have joined the party west of the former, while the Chinese are seemingly short in numbers around the latter.
