North African Theater - Fog of War Questions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

North African Theater - Fog of War Questions

Post by terry1040 »

The Manual for the Operation Torch Expansion states, that for the North African Scenarios, the players should not use the FOW options as this will make it harder for units to "hide" units in the desert. Also this should kind of simulate the small desert reconnaissance patrols.

I will play the Torch to Tunesia Scenario against the Computer AI with it playing the Axis.

If I deselect the FoW option only for the Computer AI, would it leverage the non-FOW sitation for its own purpose?
I myself will play with full FoW to make the game more challenging against the AI.

And as a general thought, is the manual statement to cautious?
I hate to play w/o FoW because I think that proper reconnaissance and of course the moment of surprise adds to the game experience also in North Africa.
Any thoughts / reflections of other players experience in PBEM matches?

Cheers
Terry

I clearly missed that in the manual [;)]

I've played it AI with FOW, as you say this adds a fun small sub-game of recon etc. The AI doesn't wander off into the desert in either Libya or Tunisia. I've never played that one MP, but I'd want full FOW if I did, getting small recon/raiding units around the flanks of the main coastal defensive line should be a part of the game?

I interpreted p. 8 of the Operation Torch manual as suggesting that players keep the general FOW option active while turning off the movement FOW option. That is how I played the scenario recently. When you select a ground unit, the show movement path gives you some intel about hexes occupied by enemy units. This intel is what I saw as the effect of desert recon patrols.

Yes, we just meant you should turn off the movement FOW.
