Just started this as I wanted a new challenge for WITPAE

All I can say is 'Holy Crap!' I have my work seriously cut out now. I know others have said the same but until you get stuck in you won't understand........

Not for the feint hearted.

Herewith some random advice.

If you bombard (with BBs) a base which is airbase level 0 or 1, it can't launch an airstrike against your ships.

Further, if you keep it above 50 runway damage, it can't launch CAP.

And, if it has no supply, it doesn't shoot flak at you.

Bottom line: Coal Harbour is an excellent firing range to train your bomber crews.[;)]

I guess that it is not for the faint hearted then.

I guess that you would have to make a lot of feints to distract a human opponent . . .

I'm playing a modified version of Scen 21 Ironman Insanity (T3) and it's killer. Nothing is safe. It's January of 42 and I've got 3-ship floatplane AMCs operating off the West Coast. Anything going from LA to Hawaii travels in a gigantic follow-the-leader armada of convoys screened by all 4 US carriers.

I swear, 3 of those AMCs operating together have enough Kates and Zeros to take on a pair of USN flattops.

Night naval searches, Black Cats with torpedoes, flood the area with S-boats, have fun.

Takes a few months to train the Cat pilots in Torpedo bombing and to get their overall Experience high enough to make them fly reliably at night.

S-Boats for sure.

S Boats are not fast enought to interdict them, and in 1942 levels of naval search are....medium-low, to say at least.

So you are stating that a faster ship than a submarine can't be torpedoed by a submarine? All of those carriers which I read about being torpedoes by a submarine did not happen? WOW!

Back in the old UV (Uncommon Valor for any young whippersnappers out there) days I had an S-boat that managed to put a torp into a Japanese CV. Couple turns later the same S-boat was sunk by...a barge.

I'm playing scenario 10 (Ironman tier 1) and it's a lot of fun. It's end of February 1942 currently.

There's still brutal fighting on Luzon, where the allied troops entrenched mostly in Clark Field and Manila. The Japanese troops are pretty worn down but the supply is running out as Manila no longer produces. Java has been invaded and all the Dutch retreated to Bandoeng and Tjilatjap. Japanese landed in NE Australia, took New Caledonia and Fiji. They tried to land on Canton Island, but three US CVs intervened resulting in a CV clash. One US CV sunk (and CAGs pretty much destroyed), but the Japanese invasion force was sunk and their CVs retired, but I'm sure they'll be back.
China is quite static, where most Japanese advances (in Nanning and other southern cities incl. Wenchow) are bogged down. In Burma an effective defense delayed them at Sittang Bridge some weeks but the Japanese brought in another division and the allies ran for the hills, along the coast and to the Bangladesh bases.

Now they decided to invade Russia. Russian subs are deployed around the home islands and they're quite effective. Let's see what the Kwantung army has in store.

yeah, I agree with you ... someone needs to re-think that a bit ... my subs hit faster ships all the time ...

I believe his point was that they are too slow to be able to be moved into position to interdict, not that they can't torpedo fast ships when they encounter them.

He has a point. They are an asset best used close to what they are guarding.
