Just Curious: A-Bomb

Post by Q-Ball »

I don't think I've ever seen an AAR that had someone drop an A-Bomb. Couldn't find it in search. Has anyone documented the results of an A-Bomb drop? I know few do so because of the victory conditions change, but curious if anyone has, and what the results were.

Im my game I have just dropped two, they were not terribly impressive. I did so as Mike (durnedwolf) - my opponent - wanted to see what happened. we are currently just playing through to the end of the taking of Tokyo. He may reply here or he may add to his AAR.

Canoerebel also dropped on on Tokyo manpower, it was unimpressive. The speculation is that it may work better on a specific factory.

Alfred weighed in on that one. Weather conditions, flak and pilot factors can all affect the accuracy, just as with any other bombing mission. IRL the mission that struck Nagasaki had been scheduled to hit another city but was diverted because of cloud cover. One of the criteria for target selection was a city relatively untouched by conventional bombing, so Tokyo was not on the list.

I wonder if most players don't shy away from its use due to its negative effect on victory level determination.

You can use 2 without adverse effect, but then there might be temptation to try another one ...

Because of the the game engine, the effects of the 'Bomb' is limited.

At the scale of this game effects of a single 1st generation 15-20kt airburst atomic bomb will by necessity be limited. Even though both Hiroshima & Nagasaki were close to optimal strikes, major destruction only occurred within a couple of miles of the hypocenters.

Now a "Castle Bravo" type thermonuclear weapon (15Mt yield) would have been a different story entirely.

As related human story, there was a man who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs.

Also, there is a woman who survived both Titanic and Britannic.

In my mod ( more advanced tech = bigger) I changed the stats and ramped it right up but I was told it does not work so we have put it back as it was. Can the bomb be changed in the editor at all ?

The "effect" quantum of the atomic bomb can not be increased. It is already at the maximum possible.
