Port Hedlund

The enemy SS are getting to be a bit more useful and I do not like it. In Port Hedlund the USS Halibut sinks an AK but then pays the ultimate price. It is hit repeatedly by DC and then forced to the surface.

Sending unescorted bombers anywhere (including 4EB) is very dangerous. Here we see 18 B-17 attacking LCU west of Cairns. They are met by over 40 Fighters and get hurt pretty badly. As Nemo once said, it is not about direct kills, it is about firing PASSES. The Japanese Fighters get multiple shots doing more and more damage to the -17s. Six are destroyed either in the air or on the ground.

NICE WORK!

Could you imagine what would happen if the Japanese with only sub chasers with the biggest gun being a 40mm, forces a sub with 6 inch guns to the surface![X(]
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

The sub is still at a disadvantage. The ship has MGs with gun shields while the sub has everything open and must run to the gun, remove the plug from the muzzle and bring up ammo from below. When my Dad's ship took part in sinking U-744, the second the sub surfaced all the MGs and 20mm cannons were ordered to fire to keep the crew away from their guns. Some of the sub crew tried but were quickly killed. The remainder hid next to the conning tower until the Captain told them to abandon as HMCS Chilliwack was about to ram.

Yes, but that was real life and I don't know how that would be depicted in the game.

I had a Dutch sub surface, the Japanese DD fired at it a couple of times but did not hit it before it slipped beneath the waves . . . [:@]

But it was not sunk. [X(] It had a lot of flooding damage and I routed it to the nearest port where it dewatered what it could, then it went to get permanent repairs.[X(]

LaFoa, New Caledonia

The Allies have demonstrated a willingness to fight at sea that has not been seen in 5-6 months. Today, CL Helena and 3 DDs sweep into the busy hex of LaFoa. The Japanese have been landing supplies and reinforcements here to aid the siege of Noumea. The Americans expect easy pickings as no STF has been spotted here recently at all.

They are stunned to find a freshly arrived (as in the-nick-of-time!) Japanese surface task force of 3 CAs and 6 DDs waiting for them.

The battle lasts for over 10 rounds and sees CL Helena SUNK as well as all three DDs smacked. Japanese take a single DD getting moderately damaged.

Very NICE result!

Charters Towers

The main PLANNED event for this turn was the Sweep and aerial bombardment of Charters Towers. his base is the main airdrome of the Allies. Plans were made for 6 Zero Sweeps, Tojo assistance, and then bombers strikes in the afternoon with large numbers of escorts. The Japanese CVs move in the bolster the assault.

As is, what seems normal, weather WRECKS the plans! **SIGH**

A massed Sweep does come in and the 112 Zero and 17 Tojo meet up with 75 Allied fighters. A major furball erupts and planes drop in decent numbers. After this, weather totally shuts down the AFs and Japanese Flightdecks. NOTHING flies for the rest of the day.

Frustrating but OK I guess.

Here are the disappointing results:

In an other interesting note for the turn, SS Amberjack plants a single TT into the stout side of CV Amagi. The big BC shrugs it off and continues steaming with her freshly upgraded sister to the Coral Sea.
