Airfields, Plane Types and Weather

Post by Mehring »

If I've got this right, the three airfield sizes are just that. It would be better if they expressed also the nature of the installation, level 1 being rough strips with basic amenities, and level 3 being concrete strips with heated hangers and repair shops. Heavy bombers simply would not be able to fly from basic airstrips during mud, their heavy ground pressure caused them to sink into the field where they stood, let alone during take off and landing. Various nations developed prefabricated, interlocking concrete slabs to more rapidly build bomber capable landing strips and repair them when damaged.
Likewise, repair during winter in unheated hangers was agonizing and slow work.

there is some note of this in the rules - see 16.6.7 but otherwise yes this is mostly abstracted into a generic airbase concept

I was thinking maybe F, F-B and Tac-B could use level 1 without penalty in fair weather +, Med-B level 2 and Heavies only level 3. There might also be a protection bonus for level 3 vs air attack as well as repair bonuses. If based on lower level structures they might receive repair and maintenance penalty and on level 1, damage in bad weather even without flight.
