no action at all today but during the naval search phase one of our picket ships 900 miles East of Marcus Island has been picked up by at least a dozen carrier based dive bombers today... there was no airstrike on the PB at all the whole day but clearly we have enemy carriers in the area... guess the invasion of Marcus Island is going in or it's a carrier raid...

TF 227 encounters mine field at Roi-Namur (132,114)

Allied Ships
SC-1065
SC-982

4 mines cleared

Pax, the question is who will do the ambush... [:D] No idea what Mundy is bringing, if he thinks he can do a quick grab on Marcus Island with only some CVEs as cover then he will be in big trouble but if he brings his whole fleet then I'm not really keen on a carrier engagement in that area, at this stage of the war we need LBA support to wear him down first before committing our carriers even though they field some 1,500 aircraft...

it's becoming crystal clear though that the enemy is moving onto Marcus Island, we have spotted only one CV TF so far...

I hoped to have some more time to reequip the carrier fighter units with Sams but super KB has just arrived in the Marianas so we have ordered the fleet to move into a position exactly eight hexes NW of Marcus Island which we should reach in three days and that should be D-Day at Marcus... I'm not planning a full carrier engagement but to hopefully strike a CVE group that I'm expecting to cover the invasion beaches... super KB fields roughly 1,500 aircraft, some 950 fighters (830 Sams, 120 Zeroes) and the rest bombers (Judy, Grace)... the fleet carriers also have all our CVEs with them which is the reason for this high number of fighters as we have loaded up all CVE that have no own air unit with fighter units...

we're trying a new tactic against the one click delete an atoll LCI(G) tactic and while we have already 200 av on Marcus (same we had at Wake which were deleted in one go by teh LCI(G) we are now even flying in another Inf rgt from Iwo Jima bringing the strenght up to 300 so hopefully after the idiotic LCI(G) have unleashed their flawed load we may have some 100 av left to fight the attacker...

what a damn silly start of the operation, while all my task forces had full op points the whole fleet only moved THREE!!!! [:@] hexes from Guam which totally screws our plan already as we won't be able to reach the position eight hexes NW of Marcus Island in time now as the enemy is already seven hexes East of Marcus so we expect the enemy to land the day after tomorrow... really don't know why the movement routines are hitting me that bad so often, I checked all settings over and over after ordering the carriers to move and the routine still screws it for no apparant reason...

noticed this turn that we overtook the Allied in air losses... already nearly 1,000 Jakes lost on nav search, the three leading airframes in losses are pretty much all coming from ASW/nav search...

Do you fly your Jakes at normal or extended ranges? Could be something to look at if you want to reduce ops losses.

Normal range and extended range, doesn't matter. Have tried everything already, doesn't matter. Those that never spot something never lose something, those units that spot subs also suffer losses. A hundred sub sightings per day means 4-10 losses each day.

I have squadrons where each pilot has flown hundreds of missions and not a single op loss due to areas where no sub has ever gone so far. There's obviously a difference in the routine when it comes down to losses and it has clearly something to do with actually getting a sighting or not. Lots of sightings, lots of losses. No sightings, no losses. Settings the same both times.

In my current game, I have had Whirlaways on ASW hit by flak. My subs have hit enemy aircraft with flak. That is probably where the OPs losses come from, damaged aircraft.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

No, damage from flak is always shown during the replay.

You've mentioned this before, and I am watching for it in my game. Thus far, I cannot corroborate, BUT I only get about 2 turns/month. Might take me a while. [X(][X(][X(]

Yeah, I guess that will take some time to reach a stage where you will have the first 100 Allied subs in your shipping lanes [:D]

It's a numbers game, it always has been. So if you don't use numbers you won't find these results. I'm using probably 1000 aircraft each day on nav search / ASW and there are usually 50 subs around, I've posted the ops reports earlier. If you have 200 aircraft on search that spot three subs each turn, nothing will happen and one won't notice anything.

Task forces break off...

enemy task forces were seven hexes East of Marcus Island yesterday so I didn't expect them to show up today already, screwing my planning even further... the amphib convoy runs right into one of my two PT squadrons at the atollthat couldn't do much in daylight but they forced a collission with a LCI being sunk... amphib task forces don't like running into enemy ships so the task force retreated out of the hex again...

sh*tload of LCI(G) in the task force again but Mundy only has four DE as escort, either he's still short on quality escorts or feels very confident...

here's the tactical situation with KB not being in position where I wanted it to be due to the damn screwed movement of only three hexes the first day... therefor we have to adjust the plan accordingly and our fleet will take position eight hexes West of Marcus Island and not NW which could bring us in range of enemy carriers if the move one hex further West... the goal still is to strike the CVE task force that is expected to move to Marcus Island with the invasion force tomorrow...

I'm not planning a carrier engagement with the enemy main fleet...

ordered lots of subs into the area but they are also coming late, halve of them only being able to move 6 hexes per day on mission speed which means the first few will only arrive tomorrow... the enemy fleet moved slightly faster than I expected as I wanted to have the faster fleet subs being around Marcus when the enemy arrives...

here's a nice air reinforcement... this Frank unit will be my best suited fighter escort, it's a pity the unit will withdraw again in mid 45... get this Sentai to fly and you have 97 high quality escorts right away, it's the only unit of this size available...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Oct 30, 44
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Marcus Island at 123,85

Japanese Ships
SSX Ha-7

Allied Ships
LCI-523

not sure I've ever been lucky with midget subs so far as they just fail to hit and as soon as escorts show up they die like flies... why the devs gave these midgets a victory value of six points is totally beyond me, should be one point like a PT...

why is there no escort with the LCI?

wth? Three LCI show up at Marcus without any escort? Looks like Mundy has split them off the main task force but for what reason???

BINGO! Our first subs arrive in the combat area and I-15 immediately scores on a CVL... shame only one torp out of a spread of six hits that light carrier, two torps might cause serious damage... wonder if that is a good omen, we also had a sub scoring the first hit on a carrier in the big carrier clash in the Marshalls in 43 and that turned into a decisive victory for us...

the sub takes a hit and over a dozen near misses but should make it home if not attacked again...

lol, our second PT squadron at the atoll engages the three unescorted LCI and sinks all of them... took all torps on the MTBs and we have no possibility to rearm... perhaps that was the enemy's plan... I know Mundy has some respect for my MTB as they performed very well around Calcutta last year (never seen that performance before) but is he really afraid of them that he just doesn't go in and land at the beaches? One of the damned LCI(G) is sunk...

oh no... I-15 moves a hex further NE after succesfully attacking CVL Cowpens and runs into what looks like a replenishment task force for the enemy fleet... missing a destroyer escort the sub takes another seven near misses now being heavily damaged... ordered back to Japan, probably 50/50 chance to make it if not attacked a further time...

another day has passed and that's the situation, the enemy has still not landed at Marcus Island and KB was nice hexes from any enemy task force so nothing happened... we keep the fleet West of Marcus now but I regret not having ordered it to the initially planned position NW of Marcus yesterday... could have ordered a move there today but hey, one of the task forces decided to refuel some DDs so we can again not move the needed eight hexes NE so we just move one hex to change position and wait for the enemy to move into the hex of Marcus Island...

we have spotted three different CV/CVL/CVE task forces, a big CV TF is with the amphibs East of the atoll, another CV and CVE TF is in the hex South East of Marcus... I expect the majority of the enemy carriers staying SE and the CVE going in tomorrow so we can strike from eight hexes, outside of the range of enemy airstrikes... if the enemy carrier force moves just one hex to the West we will have a problem, while we will still be out of their range I am sure all our strikes will target the enemy fleet carriers, probably being shot up for no gain... that's why I wanted to go into a position eight hexes NW of Marcus, would keep us further away from the enemy carriers most likely...
