Captured equipment and prisoners of war

Post by Pankatron »

Hello, I am new to this forum.
I've won my first ever game on the steam beta a few days ago and I noticed that nothing happened with surrendered soldiers and tanks from the enemy regime.

I would find it amusing if I could repurpose captured equipment against the enemy or scrap it for resources.
While the captured soldiers, on the other hand, could lead to some profile decisions, maybe? Send them to work in the mines!

Both things have been requested a number of time. My usual reply:
Equipment and the Manpower are insepeately tied together in the subunits. If there is to be captured equipment, it needs to take manpower from some place.

Prisioners of war should be implementable comapratively easy, but no idea when Vic will get around to that.

that would be really cool.

Also seeing some X-COM like mechanics with reverse engineering captured enemy equipment would be cool.

All of this +1. Prisoner camps would be awesome and also maybe some BP from captured equipment?

"Reverse Engineering" means getting the model, right?
In reality that is actually not as viable. Germany considered copying the T-34 wholesale. But given that they lacked any of the infrastructure, it would have been as much work as just developing a counterpart themself:

And I think Vic is realistic enough in this regard.

And as for adding progress to techs used in the enemy vehicle: I can tell you from Stellaris that this is not a good idea. It allows conquerors to catch up too easily.
Maybe if this Tech gain was limited to the Linear techs? Even if the enemy does not have a higher level of Linear Techs, just looking at their designs might give your designers some ideas.

That's not automatically bad, since it goes both ways - it also helps *defenders* to catch up more easily !

And it's already fairly hard in SE, considering all the steps that you have to take :
- Unlock the tech(s)
- Discover the tech(s)
- Research the tech(s)
- Unlock the model(s)
- Discover the model(s)
- Design the Model... at which point you're not even guaranteed that it will get good design stats !

(It could be even harder if, like in Sword of the Stars, you weren't guaranteed to be able to always discover all the tech in the tech tree on your own.)
