5th Panzer Div

Post by Zemke »

According to the in-game Wiki, the 5th Panzer Div arrives in Russia in July, but I got it at the beginning of Sept. Which is correct, and if July, why does it only arrive 7 Sept? Other sources also have the 5th Panzer arriving earlier than Sept and fighting throughout Barbarossa.

My understanding is that it took not heavy but considerable losses from fighting in Greece and the Balkans and needed time to refit and take on replacements. I have only read of it being in action by the beginning of the offensive towards Moscow.

I don't know, which why I posted. The game's own wiki says "moving across Russia in July", just saying. It seems to come in late. I would rather have it early and depleted, (it would be no different from my other Russian Panzer Divisions), than full strength and late.

OR at least let the player decide to send it East or refit then go.

The wiki isn't wrong, but as Fallschirmjager stated it was recuperating. If you read the German general staff meetings (the ones recovered after most were burned at end of the war), there were frequently many divisions all during the war that were well behind the lines rebuilding up strength.

So, I guess the scenario designers could've had it come into the game at low TOE and kept it frozen vs having it come in when it was full strength. That's a question you'll have to ask them but either way the end result is the same.

As for giving the player the option to throw in a depleted unit? I guess that makes sense but they also have to balance the game for Axis AI. I think it makes more sense to have it come in when it was actually going to fight historically vs messing with Axis AI, who would probably improperly use the unit vs as it was historically used (and on top of that then having to tweak production system even more to handle refit).

At the end of the day, it's a game and there's a reason they chose this approach. Division Azul was in Germany in early July 41 but doesn't enter the game until later for same reasons.

Not that it matters but the order from the O.K.H. Gen St d H Op.Abt (III) Nr. 9128/41 g.Kdos. states that they are under the command of Heeresgruppe Mitte from the 7th September and will start to move by rail from the 10th September 1941.
