Sweden Reactivates RBS 23 Air Defence Missile System in Gotland
March 20, 2021
The Swedish Armed Forces has reactivated the country’s air defence missile system 23 and will be stationed in Gotland. The ‘reintroduction’ of this missile system comes after it was put in the materiel reserve for a few years. The RBS 23 BAMSE (Bofors Advanced Missile System Evaluation)medium-range air defence system was developed in the 1990s and completed in the early 2000s. The Swedish government ordered the RBS23 in 2000 and deliveries started in 2002. The Swedish Army only trained conscripts on the system in 2008, however, the system was not taken into Army use but was used as a demonstration system.
On 1 July 2019, the system was taken into Swedish Army use and a number of RBS 23 systems were placed on Gotland, under command of the new Gotland Regiment. However the system was deployed with the PS-90 search radar and not Giraffe AMB (UndE 23). This is because the Giraffe AMB units had been updated with a new data system for relaying the air picture so they can no longer talk directly to the RBS 23 fire units. The older PS-90 can both talk to the fire units and translate the modern data system to the new one, that is why the PS-90 was picked. According to the Swedish Armed Forces, the unit in the materiel reserve trained at the Air Defence Regiment (LV6) in the Swedish city of Halmstad.
RBS 23 BAMSE air defense system
The RBS 23 is a Swedish medium range, all-weather capable air defense system developed by Bofors and Ericsson Microwave Systems (now both in the Saab group). BAMSE is designed for protection of military facilities, ground forces and high value infrastructures. It is intended to operate against very small and fast targets such as attack missiles, anti-radiation missiles, UAVs and cruise missiles. It can also engage high altitude flying targets. The system consists of a Surveillance and Control Centre (SCC) and two to four Missile Control Centers (MCC). The missile control center trailers are located up to 20 km away from the SCC and interconnected via a cable or radio communications (up to 15 km).
The part of Missile system 23, which launches the surface-to-air missile, is called ‘Launch unit 23’. Launch unit 23 is a missile vehicle that can be towed by any type of pulling vehicle. The roof of the vehicle is mounted with a gun carriage with six launch-ready missiles, an extendable 8m-long mast with command radar and an infrared camera. The unit can be connected to the central reconnaissance radar called as ‘Intelligence unit 23’. It can also, however, operate independently if needed. The missile used by the RBS 23 system is based on the RBS 70, but unlike its predecessor it is a radar command control ACLOS missile, which means that the missile itself and the target have to be tracked by the fire control radar until impact.

"In 2019, the U.S. Air Force deployed our first High-Energy Laser Weapon System, HELWS, overseas, and it’s now nearing 4,000 hours of operation. Now certified for use in combat, multiple additional systems are now in theater"
With a low cost-per-shot ratio HEL is an affordable and viable option to protect military & critical infrastructure. Lasers offer a nearly infinite number of shots, minimal logistics and precision accuracy with very low collateral damage.."
RI&S has successfully completed full installation and testing on small Army vehicles as well as an Apache attack helicopter.

Is this the Iranian vessel with which the Israeli cargo ship LORI was attacked last night? An investigation conducted by the blog "Intel Times" succeeded in locating in the route taken by the Israeli ship, an unidentified Iranian vessel (not a ship and possibly a military one) that was at the time of the attack (attaching a mine or firing a missile) near the Israeli ship.

I think Chains of War was too generous (and I mean way too generous) with how the US could perform in a future shooting war with China: https://www.yahoo.com/news/were-going-t ... 03936.html
Well, scenarios are often (not always) written to give the players a chance, whichever side they might play. Even if the fight isn't "fair", most games sell a challenge but a challenge you can beat. In the meantime, real military professionals are trying to make sure the fight is unfair as possible. That's not as fun in a commercial wargame but then again the stakes for losing are worse in real life.

If real life warfare is being compared as a chess, then the attacking side would rather hope the defending side has only the King left and no other pieces protecting it. It will put the game to stalemate as soon as possible without any causality. You bring down the enemy with the least harm to be done, ended the war the fastest way possible, everybody but loser is happy.
It will be vastly boring and predictable, but those aren’t the worst compare to deaths and suffers when a “fair fight” was dragged for too long.

Speaking at an @IISS_org virtual event, CDS General Sir Nick Carter said that by 2030 an RAF tactical formation could be made of up two Typhoon Fighter Jets, ten Mosquito uncrewed fighter aircraft and 100 Alvino swarming uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Mosquito is the RAF’s name for a programme to build the UK’s first uncrewed fighter aircraft, able to target and shoot down adversaries aircraft. The project is currently being led by Spirit AeroSystems with an aim for full-scale flight tests in 2023.
Carter told the thinktank: “I think by 2030, it’s entirely respectable for us to posit a view that a tactical formation in the Air Force will move from being eight Typhoon to being two Typhoon, 10 Mosquitoes and 100 Alvino" (Alvina is to be a swarming drone platform).

The final look of the future Russian PAK DA bomber (code "Messenger"), which is being developed by PJSC "Tupolev", was approved by the Ministry of Defense. RIA Novosti was informed about this by a source in the defense industry complex.
According to the agency's interlocutor, priority was given to long-range weapons and aircraft stealth. In addition, the onboard systems of the Long-Range Aviation Prospective Aviation Complex will be automated as much as possible, up to the possibility of using the bomber in unmanned mode.
At the moment, construction of several prototypes of the aircraft is underway. It is reported that the machine will be created according to the "flying wing" scheme (similar to the "Okhotnik" UAV), have a subsonic speed and a long flight duration.
It is assumed that the stealth bomber will be able to use long-range missiles, promising hypersonic missiles, as well as the entire range of air-to-air missiles as weapons. All weapons will be located in the internal fuselage compartments. Also, the possibility of controlling UAV groups is not excluded.
Earlier, the defense industry reported that tests of the radar signature of special layouts and individual full-size elements of the PAK DA confirmed that a promising bomber, subject to the use of certain tactics, will be able to overcome the air defense lines of a potential enemy.
The adoption of a new combat vehicle is scheduled for 2027. It is assumed that the new bomber will replace the Tu-95MS.

RE: Naval and Defense News
The Israeli Air Force received the new Oron spy plane, considered to be the most advanced plane of its kind in the world, on Sunday.
The new plane will be part of the Air Force’s 122nd Squadron, also known as the Nachshon Squadron.
The plane - a modified Gulfstream G550 bizjet - is equipped with artificial intelligence technology and is notable for its excellent flight capabilities and low maintenance costs. The plane will be equipped with advanced radar made by Israel Aerospace Industries, as well as with other advanced intelligence-gathering systems, providing new capabilities in terms of coverage in all types of weather and in any level of visibility. The plane is designed to give the Air Force a comprehensive picture of an area in real time, including the mapping of enemy ground forces.
The development of the plane took eight years, with the participation of the joint Defense Ministry and Israel Defense Forces research and development body, the Air Force, Military Intelligence, the navy and Israel Aerospace Industries. The Oron is meant to allow combined arms divisions to operate more effectively by getting a real-time reading of a situation made available simultaneously to different branches of the military. This is consistent with a change in strategy currently being undertaken by the military, consisting of an increase in coordination between different branches of the military on the battlefield.
Details are too sketchy to post this aircraft for a new database entry..
