3 hex rule supply overriden by MP cost?

EDIT: Does the VehRec in the Supply Details Depots line mean Vehicles Received? If so why are static divisions receiving Vehicles? If VehRec means Vehicles used to deliver supplies from the depot then read below.


In the attached save my northern most Infantry divisions 217, 219, 1 are static just across the Volkhov river, 1 hex from their supply source at Volkhov.

Looking at their supply details they are requiring vehicles for supply delivery even at 1 hex distance. There is an ample supply stock there so it's not because of insufficent freight for the double freight cost.

Another division, not static, the 254 in the port of Novaya Ladoga is also only 1 hex away and doesn't require any vehicles, as expected.

Going down the line of divisions to Lake Ilmen repeats the picture. All are within 3 hexes of depots with ample supply but several are still requiring vehicles for supply delivery, notably when across a major river from their source. In only 1 of these cases, the 58th it's because it decided to draw from a depot 4 hexes away instead of the nearer one.

First I thought it was the major river messing things up, but the 206 next to Novgorod is also asking for trucks even though it's only 2 minor rivers away from it's supply source in Novgorod.

This leads me to believe there seems to be some kind of MP cost condition attached to the 3 hex rule but nothing is mentioned in the manual.

Don't know if this a bug or undocumented WAD.

While we at it, I also don't know why units so close to depots are losing freight, except if it is because they are on the front line.

Friction. It's very much based on range, and the few units I was looking at within 3 hexes had very little freight lost. Do you have a specific case to look at? If so, always best to provide me with a save before the logistics phase and one after so I can repeat it. Thanks.

Turn 65 in the saves above, all except the Panzer/Mot Divisions are North/South Lake Ilmen. 14th Panzer is down at 244,147, 60th at 255,164

1 hex distance
219th Rec 135, Lost 4
217th Rec 122, Lost 6

269th Rec 96, Lost 4

4 hex distance
121st MP14 Rec 116, Lost 36
12th MP11 Rec 184, Lost 42
253rd MP20 Rec 143 Lost 58

5 hex distance
3/122 MP11 Rec 76, Lost 9

6 hex
1/251 MP18 Rec 44, Lost 16

7 hex
3/251 MP19 Rec 44, Lost 18

2,3 hex distance, almost never any freight losses, and if then sub 1 %

It seems inconsistent, units right next to depots suffering 4-6% losses of received freight, units 2-3 hexes suffering mostly nil, then a huge jump to 20-30%. Further out it's clear the MP cost starts adding up due to the terrain.

And then I randomly find cases like the 14th Panzer Division

Range 7 MP7 Rec 329 Lost 3
Range 25 MP25 Rec 158 Lost 0

or 60th Mot

Range 11 MP13 Rec 239 Lost 7
Range 9 MP13 Rec 20 Lost 0

So MP costs which lead to massive Freight losses in some cases are leading to almost Nil in others.

I was hoping you would be able to clarify. If Admin is causing such huge swings it would be nice to know.

Too complicated for Gary to give me all the details, but I learned three things from speaking with him about this.

1) He can't confirm that admin leader roll impacts lost freight, although it definitely impacts the amount sent out.
2) A support check is made to determine lost freight, so units without proper support will suffer more lost freight.
3) Losses of freight going to the depot (let's say passing through interdicted hexes, partisan/air) are not accounted for until the freight is attempted to be sent to the unit. That's because there is no way of knowing what the freight was that was destroyed when going to the depot until it tries to turn into something specific (fuel, supplies, etc.). So like many things in the losses system, you don't see all the impacts directly and they can show up later.

That's all the detail we have to give on this subject.

1) I changed out the leaders going and lost freight has gone down, so maybe Admin rolls are the factor.

2) Support Check you mean if enough support squads are present? Should be the default case for near full strength divisions in Corps/Army support range.

3) Have thought of interdiction, that's why I focused on the northern units which don't suffer those effects.
