Turn 4

3rd Battle Hex east of Pskov

Manstein himself Hasty attacks Vatutin's 112 Rifle division and forces a retreat. I try and move as little as possible during my turn to build CPP & keep fatigue down. All in all I am happy on this battle even though I am using direct Army chain of command instead of an intermediate Corps HQ. Vatutions' HQ is close to full strength but I still had another horrid roll :( Must be some penalty for Soviets too the first turns OR I just sux at rolls for the Soviets ;-) Will talk about air cover in the next snapshot.

Turn 4

North

3rd battle Air Results

I had mentioned in another AAR post about how many fighters to bombers you want to have. Here you can see I kept that ratio & was able to protect my bombers from harm. Yes, I lost a crap load of fighters but they did their job well. The figthers also shot down 4 BF-109s. I am happy so far with this result too with my Fighters gaining 2 experience on that fight. If I can bomb and not have a loss in bombers I am happy.

*** I also had 3 Air Superiority missions set up but the battle took place outside of the battle zone. In those AS directives I have Mig's flying high, Yaks flying Medium, and Lagg's flying low level AS missions.

**** My Ground Support missions are set up to have a minimum of 4 Fighter squadrons escorts to 1 bomber squadron. I then assign each Army that GS. Thus the Leningrad front has three GS missions for each of the 3 Front line HQ's. Thats a lot of Fighters ;-) (This does not include the 3 AS missions being flown either. I will increase the AS to 6 in this area soon enough(if I get enough fighters that is))

Pskov Supply drops don't go uncontested. My new appointed Air commander shows he likes to fight. With 3 supply drops to Pskov Falakeev intercepts all three ;-) I will take easy wins for experience.

Turn 4

Velikie Luki

City was taken last turn. I just didn't have the units to safely contest the area to my standards.

Turn 4

Smolensk

I also gave up Smolensk without a fight last turn. I am not a believer of putting up to 10 Division in Smolensk for a City Fort this early. I gave up the City and spared the divisions for placement elsewhere. I can think of better places to put City forts but this early in the game I am not going to let go of good divisions for a possible no gain or 1 or 2 turn delay at a cost of up to 10 divisions. I will choose a better place & time.

Turn 4 Beginning of Turn

Center

Gomel area given up without a fight. Pretty much in my AAR with Bobo this is where I am as a German in the Gomel area with the Soviets going to have a loss of 11 divisions. I saved those divisions for later as a comparison. I can't keep the retreat up forever & I am playing with fire. But I do have a line I start to fight at & I know the German situation for supply. So see if I can calculate this correctly. Otherwise I am going to have a big fat LOSS in this game.

I give up Kiev saving units. Again, playing with fire here because of Sudden Death Victory condition.

Turn 4

Kirovograd

Advance in the South. Pretty much where I am at in my Bobo game without loss of Divisions. Am I right to do it this way? Probably not because of how fast railheads advance now along with super depot. But lets play it out.

Turn 4

Odessa

Odessa given up to save the Divisions for another day. A German will blockade the port & force the City Fort Garrison to surrender in a couple of turns at most. The Soviets may gain a turn or two at the cost of up to 10 Divisions. I am not going to play that game. The divisions are saved, refitted and will be used elsewhere while the Germans run to catch up.

Turn 4 Beginning of Turn

Manpower

Not bad since my Inf divisions are pretty much filled up. Granted my Armor & Mech probably never will be anywhere close to the ToE I want them. But I am controlling those with minimum or no ToE advancement. Artillery is still going to stay at Stavka with almost all at 50%. Some are set to 100% Stavka and handed out to prime Armies for combat.
