Does altitude matter

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Altitude DEFINITELY matters. For A2A combat, the factors that matter are 1) maneuverability, 2) climb, and 3) max speed at the particular altitude being fought at.

Unfortunately you have to go into the editor to see the performance envelopes of different aircrafts. Here are two examples. Top one is a Bf 109G-6, the bottom is the P-47D-25. If the American plane can fighter the German around 25K', it's going to have a major advantage.

The editor does have an option to save the aircraft data in a CSV file. It can then be viewed in a spreadsheet program like Excel or LibreOffice.

Oh cool, I have to try that. No idea that was possible. Also for all other equipment/tanks etc?

Yes, there are options to save information about ground elements and devices in CSV files. These files for ground elements and devices are not particularly useful for general game play, because the in-game comparison tools (e.g., the Commander's Report) provide the same information. This is not the case for aircraft, because the in-game tools do not show how aircraft speed varies with altitude. The Spitfire IX and LF.IX models look pretty similar in the Commander's Report, with top speeds of 408 and 404 mph, respectively. However, the IX reaches its top speed at 25000 ft, whereas the LF.IX hits maximum speed at 21000 ft. If these aircraft are fighting at 18000 ft, the LF.IX will be at an advantage with a speed of 394 mph compared to 385 mph for the IX.

I tried it and managed to convert CSV into a crude Excel file. I did this with all the leaders. Figured it would be a handy tool to sort all leaders for each nation in a seperate tab and then use Excel's filter function to make it easier to find suitable leaders. Even color coding the values so a quick glance can identify suitable candidates for what you need. I need to get more into the game to start comparing aircraft in the way you describe.
