Any future Modern Warfare Wargames?

Post by Slick91 »

After doing a tally on Matrix Games product list it is very lacking in any modern combat games. Don’t get me wrong, I have UV and love it! I will purchase AA:HTTR & WITP and I am on the fence with EYSA.

But, with the exception on Flashpoint Germany (which I’ll purchase when released) there are no other games mentioned that will carry a modern warfare theme. Here is the tally that I counted:

World War II = 15
Sci-Fi = 4
Modern Warfare = 1
Napoleonic = 1
------------------------
Total = 21

Can anyone from Matrix care to make an off the record comment about any future games on the drawing board? :)

Combat Leader is perhaps the single biggest awaited Matrix Games item in production.

Combat Leader will be released as Cross of Iron, but it will see modules for modern as well (assuming the world doesn't come to an end or people stop using computers hehe :) ).

I think it is also possible, that Battlefields won't stay in WW2 for ever as well.

Of Future War Games

Post by ShermanM4 »

The reason why I couldnt stand BH1942 because it was just a playable battlefield with very little accuracy in terms of weapons or realism. I absolutely loved PlanetSide. A futuristic war game that was playable for everybody. I think in a few years or so this whole WWII genre of gaming will be even more overdone than it already is. Hopefully some really cool turn based battlefield style war games will come out dealing with the future and science fiction type wars.

Battlefield is set to go to Vietnam next, I have seen the demo and god it looks cool.

I concur though, Planetside seems to combine the best of Battlefield with online Multiuser gaming.

Watched a buddy play it a solid week when it was new. But the game needed work like all games seem to need work, and he wandered off back to EQ (kinda hard to stay away from a game where you have several 65th level characters I guess).

I agree that the market has room for modern though.

Problem is my two best examples are not computer games.

I would love to see the Up Front card using game go modern.

There is also the new game Lock and Load (Vietnam setting again).

Perhaps there just wasn't much "modern" stuff out there for Matrix to pick up ? WW2 has always been the big seller anyway, which explains the bias in that direction. I'd like more modern stuff too though, particularly something with real "construction kit" potential.

There are a few out there with other publishers. TacOps 4 (Battlefront) and Armored Task Force (Shrapnel) are very good, albeit very much for the hardcore grogs . I hear Decisive Action (about the only thing HPS publish that John Tiller DIDN'T write) is excellent too, although I havn't tried that.

Ya me to, first month I played it solid and then it was just old. It doesnt really offer a whole depth of things to do. It is a pure FPS battle simuolator. I cant blame him for picking the RPG EQ over that.

Yes the Vietnam should be good. I just hope they strive for accuracy, if they dont and just go for general FPS playability I will not buy that game. I am puting Massive Assault on my Christmas list, i've heard way to many good things about that game to pass it up!

I dont know, considering board games, PC games, literature, films, et al... when the WWII generation dies off in the next decade or so I think there will be a sudden explosion of popular demands for all of the modes I listed above and then like a supernova it will crumbel into dust. I definatley think were already seeing some malaise of interest for that generation. I know the Band of Brothers and Greatest Generation phenomonan will keep gamers and the general public interrested its all gonna start to fade away until they all dissappear, then the big bang then gone again.

Also, I think if Matrix published a game about the Crusades in Medieval Europe i'd buy that.

Then again, Global Warming might cause massive drought world economic collapse, military frictions which will rip apart our world peace just like the second world war did.

And when humanity patches up the same ole mess 100 years from now, guys will be again wondering where the hobby is going hehe.

The biggest problem I have with modern, is it seems to either be worthless conflicts to boring to game out, ie Russians vs Mujahedeen oh yippee, or it is another war where the US beat the snot out of a target that would never have had a chance under any scenario (I have zero interest in a game of Desert Storm 1 or 2).

Wargames seem to have lost their gaming desirability after Korea Vietnam and the Arab Israeli conflicts prior to the 80s (where either side could have won).
I never got any thrill out of Nato vs Warsaw Pact conflicts (probably because I was to stressed out over being likely in one of the Nato units at the time).

Part of the reason why Matrix is not doing a modern SP game is that the game engine has gone as far as they can take it. So they are working on a whole new game; Combat Leader. This game will be made in modules. The first is on the Eastern Front, and the second should be the Cold War. For a modern game now, check out Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank at the Steel Panthers Camo site. Its a redone SPII. Good new stuff.

I agree that there is not much you can create in this current time period that would be very exciting as a game.

To clarify, when I say "modern wargame" I'm thinking Cold War. The only foreseeable threat to the US/NATO today would be a China vs US conflict in the next 10-20 years assuming China follows through in its military upgrading.

The real "Mother of All Battles" would have been the Cold War gone hot in the early to mid 1980s. But what I want to see is a complete air, land, sea game. Harpoon3 does the air and sea aspect very good, but has no serious land element (yet) ;) . Flashpoint Germany or even (modern) Combat Leader appears to do the land element well. But, no one has tried to put forth a combined game at the operational level.

You could build the game engine around Europe and then have add-ons that would cover the Med., Asia, Pacific, etc. Hopefully, it would be playable on a display resolution of larger than 1024x768. Throw in a dynamic campaign system and... :D

Maybe what I should do is win a multi-million dollar lottery and start my own game company.

True that would be scarry. Still, I liked the Fulda Gap scenerio the best for TOAoW I. Dont get me wrong I love WWII sims! I have to agree I couldnt stand any of the American campaigns for Steel Panthers II when it came out, it left me thinking: hmmmmm who will I mercislesly crush this time? The Israeli campaigns were fun and playing random battles between the Soviets vs US any time 60's - 80's was fun. Im also gonna have to add Titans of Steel to my Xmas list.

Thanks, I'll have to check that one out. I have not played SP or SPWaW in months.

Not to pick nits but isn't Cross of Iron the name of a Squad Leader expansion? Is there any legalese that might come into play? Just adding my two cents.

That reminds me of an article I read some time ago about scenario creation and making it playable (TOAW Article I think). In it the author wrote about making victory conditions such that the Iraqis would have a chance to win. This would include things like the Iraqis holding out for a certain number of turns or inflicting enough US casualties, etc...

It all comes down to good scenario design. But probably would make a lousy campaign game.

Cross of Iron is also a book and a movie based on the book as well.

Probably a few other areas where "Cross of Iron" has been used.

Which just indicates, that eventually you will encounter identical names in some things, and only a weird rich person would devote resources to cry about it hehe.

In the case of the Cross of Iron Squad Leader module, well of course that is a product that is as done as dinner from a company that no longer exists as other than a label owned by a conglomerate that really doesn't have the time of day for petty little products like wargames.

So if MiniMicrosoft aka Hasbro wants to be mean sure they have the cash, but do they care.

Actually if Matrix Games became successful, he could probably get Hasbro to buy it for a handful of millions (they do that a lot eh). And you know something, I would drink a toast to David's success if he pulled it off hehe.
Not easy to become a millionaire in wargaming ya know :)

Im currently playing Planetside as my full time game and I can say once you get past the "noob" stage and get some command rank and join a decent sized unit you can have a blast leading squads and platoons of Armor/Infantry and Air units to take continental objectives.

The Outfit im currently in usually fields 2-3 20 man or so platoons one being heavy in Armor the other a combined air/spec ops unit.

The game itself has come along way from its initial release and I would both recomend trying it or coming back to it if you tried it in the past and found it lacking.

For anyone interested in joining a great group run by wargamers and military guys contack Aztek, Terran republic, Emerald server.

I used to play the New Conglomorate on the Johari server mostly. The biggest thing I couldnt stand about it, was the "Base Voleyball." Do you get any points for defending a base yet? Or do you just keep taking base after base meanwhile losing the one you just took while on you way to the next one? That was the biggest turn off to me. Otherwise I thought graphics, weapons, soundtrack, multiplay in squads, was all awsome and very well done game!

Bases do not change hands nerarly as often. There are new "modules" that enhance defences as well as facility benefeits that kick in when certain bases are linked togther.

The continents now "lock" one you have all the bases so enemy troops cannot use the hart drpships unless they take a base and break the lock.

The new underground caverns arw fun as well.

The expansion also introduced long range artillery and some new 'alien" type weaponry.

To make the fighting move away from te bases they essentially tripled the exp per kill while lowering the exp per base hack.

The new benefeits and modules make bases much harder to take and "front lines" are developing more and more.

Worth another look for sure. Emerald has the most population now so if your going to try it I would suggest going there.

One of the things I like about SPMBT (or a modern CL when it comes out) is the use of special ops teams. I know DS I & II were walk overs, but you can do special op stuff with the modern games. A great scenario would be the Operation Eagle Claw-the raid into Iran to get the hostages out. Another scenario is Black Hawk Down (I think someone has made a scenario of that at the Wargamer forum). I also like to test out equipment like the Stryker vehicles. Air-Mech ops and modern amphibious (Operational Manuever From the Sea) are also favorite scenarios I work on. Also for modern conflicts there is still N/Korea and Iran.

besides randy:

have you played my "weasel" scen for SPMBT.

you can get it at the wargamer scen depot, it´s
called "bagdhad outskirts" ( or so :( ).

also i would find a iran scen quite interesting, but mostly
i like nato vs. WP ones.
