Apologies, I didn't really expand on that point. By "roleplay as a side" I meant to play in a manner consistent with the era in question and not “game the game “. Generally, anything that adds to the history rather than takes away from it.

The reason I asked is that there are many ahistorical options available to players, which is one of the attractions of the game, in my opinion. So, where would an Axis invasion of the US sit? Or the Allies send units to fight in Russia? That sort of thing?

Which is completely fine - alt-history is a part of wargaming, and SC gives a lot of those as options. Again, poorly worded on my part, perhaps it should have read only "don't just **** with game systems for the kicks".
