Carrier Attacks
So if your CV group is in Fleet Mode, are searches and air attacks done automatically? Or do you have to start the attack manually? Do you have to be within 3 hexes of your target?

RE: Carrier Attacks
Defensively yes.
If you see something you want to attack you have to initiate...
If you are attacked you will automatically defend.

I must be doing something wrong then. When I click on an enemy fleet I get the message: Cannot occupy same hex with enemy, or something like that?

RE: Carrier Attacks
I hope that ALvaro is paying attention to all of the trouble people are having with this system. Either the majority of us are thick-headed or the attack routine is especially and unnecessarily complicated and confusing.
I'm on turn 5 and no matter what I do I still haven't been able to initiate an attack with any of my naval units. Probably because I still can't figure out what f'ing mode I have to be in coupled with what distance the units are from each other depending on if I am near a port or a convoy route or on a convoy route or near land or if I am in pursuit mode because I happened to end a move near an enemy unit who happened to end his destination hex which just happened to be near my unit or whatever and coupled with if the attack is going to automatic or manual and what distances are involved with that situation and if the moon is aligned with the earth. Give me a break.

The land combat works fine. It's the naval part that's not very well laid out in the manual! And if someone has an answer, cite the page in the manual.

RE: Carrier Attacks
You need to select naval bombardment (or press 1), while your fleet is selected and in range already. Surface fleets (no carriers included) have 1 range only. Carrier fleets have 3 range. Subs have 3 (or 5?) range. You cannot attack from a port. Naval combat permission table on page 91 may help you.

Move next to the enemy then right click attack if you are surface
If you are a CV fleet you can be within 3 hexes away.

RE: Carrier Attacks
They all work the same way.
With land you don't MOVE on top of a target. You get next to it and attack it.
Same with naval.

RE: Carrier Attacks
Al, All I can say is you've manage to take all of the fun out of this for me.
I have read the manual, watched 8 hours of Let's play Videos, Copied, pasted and printed notes, spent hours making spreadsheets about naval combat and I still don't have a clue what I am doing.
How anyone could get themselves so wrapped around programming and come up with all of the possible combination of requirements for combat I'll never know. You should stand back and take a long hard look at all of the variations on naval combat that you have created. Look at all of the tables and all of the pages and pages of rules involving modes and distances and automatic and manual and hex to be on and intervention and pursuit. It goes on and on.
I would say it is just me but I have made it a point to read every post in this forum so far and I am not the only one struggling with this. What has started out to be a game has become a fulltime job.
You should keep in mind the ultimate goal of a game. Entertainment. And you are competing for our entertainment dollars.
I am tired and frustrated so I won't delete it tonight. Maybe when I'm fresh I'll try it again but a f'ing game shouldn't make a person feel this way.

All of your answers worked. I can't believe that I missed that information in the manual. I'll have to check out page 91!

Perhaps war games are not your thing. This is not abnormal.
Especially for the Pacific War and Naval warfare. It is very hard to do correctly and most games do not get it correct. This is one of the reasons I cannot play some of the Strategic Command games. Great Games, but the Naval side, which I like, is a joke.
In order to do Naval war and the Pacific War at any level beyond Risk you need all those tables and rules.
I am sorry you dislike the game, but as I said sounds like you don't care for war games.
RE: Carrier Attacks
Page 80 says “Submarine fleets may be attacked by surface fleets only if they
border a non-ocean hex. Carrier fleets and air units may always attack
submarine fleets”
The Table of Naval Combat Permission on Page 91 Says
“ Attacker Fleet, “Carrier”, Defender Fleet, “Sub”, Defender Position, “Sub on or next to non-ocean hex”, Attack Possible, “Yes”
Right now, I seem to be able to attack a sub in an ocean hex that is not next to a non-ocean hex with a land-based air unit, but I cannot attack it with a carrier. Weather is clear for both the attackers and defender’s hex the carrier has two op points.
Which is correct? Or What am I missing?

RE: Carrier Attacks
The manual needs to be changed. Carriers can no longer directly attack subs, unless in shallow water. Carriers add a bonus to convoy escorts if placed on a convoy lane - ie an indirect attack on subs.
RE: Carrier Attacks
Thanks for the reply. I thought it was likely the case but you always wonder if a bug has popped up.
And Alvaro, I'm having lots of fun with this game. IMO you hit the sweet spot.

RE: Carrier Attacks
Yea that CV vs sub rule was changed and I forgot to update the manual.
Glad you are liking it.
@MemoryLeak - ask all the questions you want. If you are used to UoC, OoB, SC3, then yes this is different, more serious.

But you have to move a carrier to attack with it correct? Ie., if you are already at sea and within 3 hexes of an enemy naval unit, you can not attack while stationary (ie launch 2 air strikes while stationary?AlvaroSousa wrote: Mon May 03, 2021 8:16 pm Move next to the enemy then right click attack if you are surface

If you are already at sea with a CV fleet, you can attack at a range of 3 hexes (with Carrier Operations 1942), 4 hexes (with Carrier Operations 1943), 5 hexes (with Carrier Operations 1944). The range attribute.basilstaghare wrote: Sat May 28, 2022 9:05 amBut you have to move a carrier to attack with it correct? But, beware that you need your naval stack to be in Fleet mode. And also, the enemy fleet cannot be attacked by carriers if it has performed a night move. Night move is super important.
