invasion hexes

I am having a hard time figuring out where to place my invasion force. Sometimes there is more than one hexside available and some of them won't let the invasion toggle work and I have to take the move back and try another. Is there a way to figure out exactly where to place my force? Am I missing something? It seems like more work than it could be. Thanks,
