Adding Manual Missions when using AI

Post by davbaker »

Hi,
I've been mostly ignoring the Air war, its now late 42 and thought I'd try a few things.
Screen Shot on left is the Doctrine summary, pre-execution, and shows me adding Ground Attack (Interdiction) to 8th Army and Bomb City to 4th.
Right Pane shows Air execution Phase summary.
My added missions are missing and also some extra ones seemed to have been added.
I thought the idea with the AI is that it gives you a basic setup that you can tweak.
I've tried this several times and cannot seem to get any manual missions to 'stick'.

What am I missing/doing wrong?

Thanks

The way I understand it from a tutorial video I'm watching is that if you start a scenario with air assist on, it will wipe out any missions you add. If you want to make new missions, you can start the scenario with air assist off, click the air assist button during the planning phase and then add them. But don't push it again in that planning phase.

Ok,
I must re-read the manual by the sound of it.
I thought that Auto did the heavy lifting, but you can still tinker if you wish, didnt realise it doesnt allow modifications.
Sounds like I have it totally wrong.

Thanks

there are 2 ways to use the AI-assist and they interact with manual modifications differently.

1) if you select the option in the game set up, the AI-assist works twice each turn (when you press F12), generates ADs, redeploys the air force etc. In this context F12 over-rides any manual changes you may have made

2) if the option is off you can use the AI-assist by pressing the button (the mechanics are in 17.1 of the manual so not going to repeat here). In this case, you can press the AI-assist in the air planning phase and then add manual changes (this order is critical). When you press F12 it will execute the mix of the AI generated AD and those you added/amended. Same in the ground phase, select the AI-assist and it will move your airforce to meet your orders and then you can make the manual tweaks you want (again the order is critical, the AI-assist over-rides any of your alterations)

Also, with the AI assist off, when you psuh the AI assist button the first time in the turn, the AI assist will not only wipe all missions you planned previous turn, it will also usually use all the planes it has to support the associated armies (on the Soviet side). That means that there are simply no planes left to plan any additional missions for the player. That means that to plan any mission (like ground attacks for interdiction, which comes in handy occasionally), you must first remove a number of ground support missions for each air army.
If you don't use the AI assist button, you will run out of planes,m or rather, all your planes will end up in the reserves, unless you assign them by hand to an air army/aog each turn.

Thanks for all the clarifications guys, very helpful.

All makes sense when you actually read the manuual properly, not just skim it [:)]
