Thanks to those who made meaningful contributions to this thread - whether for or against.

I have decided to pull the trigger and will be attempting a game with AllenK as soon as we get SCWaW finished. I hope it proves more successful than WITP-AE, but am encouraged by what Zovs and Loki have said in particular about being able to automate a lot of 'stuff' and then being able to change settings as and when comfortable to do so.

I don't know which side I will be yet - but am looking forward to getting started and will be doing an AAR.

Question on betting on the number of moves you make before abandoning the game. I think.

Yes I know and I answered 1. It's answered with a question mark as I can't say that with any certainty as I haven't tried the game yet. But its a good proxy based on how long I lasted with WITP-AE.

Ah. I was to focused on the Under/Over part to get that. [:)]

One is the number I lasted in all of the three older games mentioned in this thread. [:D]

I don't know which side I will be yet - but am looking forward to getting started and will be doing an AAR.

glad to have helped inform your purchase choice

but, serious advice, don't rush into the campaign. Even with the AI-help, the superbly written manual ([8D]) and the very neat one page guides there is too much going on to get much out of it as a first go. Use the Road to Leningrad scenario as a test bed, its (rightly) hard for the Axis to get beyond a draw but you are moving say 20-25 counters a turn, the air war is fairly linear and if it goes wrong ... well restart with no great time commitment

Yes we've decided to each have a go at one of the intro scenarios first in order to try and understand what the hell is going on [:)] before getting the campaign underway.

No. Go for the full 41 campaign as the Russians. And don't read the manual, that's a form of cheating.

Net result? - I lost after half a turn.
No sooner did I press go or play and without even being able to look at the map I was under attack and my poor little laptop whirred and puffed for about 15 minutes of processing.
So I started up another laptop and played nice Ageod's AJE - Birth of Rome instead.

Will try again after my manual arrives.

This has always worked for me: do follow real life high level commanders (Stavka, OKH). Knowing what they did is always a plus.

As a Soviet, during Barbarossa, my advice: do NOT stack, avoid thick carpet spamming behind the frontline, use *consecutive* defensive lines. Fight and survive (many will be left behind, it's the price you need to pay).

Concentration and economy of forces that is. With thick carpets and stacking you won't have the latter [;)]

Don't forgot the 1 page guides very helpful. Also, you don't have to read the entire manual front to back. I think you can use F5 and search for whatever step/phase or place your at and just read on that for you need to know, that way you can slowly build up without overloading your self.

Really good idea on doing the small scenarios first to get the hang / feel.

Come on guys, sell it to me.

First thing's first though, because this is a deal-breaker (regardless of whether the game is good or not); is it like WITP-AE where the font of so much key information is written so that it looks like you are viewing Pluto using a telescope the wrong way round?

I am a gentleman of a certain age. I want to play a wargame. I don't want a headache after five minutes of intense squinting.

Thank-you.

Well, the truth is only sissy bois play WITE1 these days... [:-] That's why.
