Naval support

So I know that ships aid in land attacks but wondering if anyone has any more in depth knowledge, seems like carriers can do one or two ground strikes depending on whether they have moved but it seems they give lots of ground support, other ships seem to assist every round. and are you better splitting carriers up and doing individual strikes or just attack with the whole force?

Well splitting can be dangerous...leaving all your carriers unattended...but if you are in a safe place splitting can be a plus.

Can just keep your carriers offshore and ground bombard with ships next to shore.

The only thing I don't like is you have to split up your carriers to strike different targets.
