That guy leaning over the plotting table on the "Setting Sail!" screen is actually the father of one of the makers of AE - nice little homage.

Could have been hypersensitivity to light, or just trying to minimize light to improve night vision. The Japanese kept their night lookouts in a dark room for most of the day.
