Extended Pearl Harbor strike by Japanese AI?

Post by apd1004 »

Returning to AE after many years away. Playing vanilla scenario 1 vs Jap AI.

It's 9 December 1941 and the KB has been loitering in the same spot from initial setup and has continuously bombed Pearl Harbor every day since the initial raid. All 8 BB's are now on the bottom.

I don't ever remember the AI being this aggressive before. Is this something new?

The vanilla scen001 has many AI variants, ranging from historical AI behaviour to aggressive (non-historical and expansive). When you start a new vanilla campaign against Jap AI, the game will select one variant. You can manually delete historical or non-historical variants before you start playing.

Read about the AI here, especially post #3

Remember that scen 001 has been udpated by AndyMac. Current version of this scenraio is v6 (scen001 v6)

Ok thanks for the info. I'm actually intrigued by this, hopefully it turns out to be a challenging run.

Just think of how much fuel the American Battle Fleet will not use now. [;)]

The big question is how many skilled pilots the KB has lost doing those strikes. That is the glass jaw of the KB - take away the very highly trained and experienced pilots and it quickly becomes overmatched by USN carriers and aircraft.

It the AI acts as it usually does after KB departs, it will end up splitting KB to cover various operations and you will have opportunities for revenge.

The same happend to me, the KB hit Pearl Harbour again on the second day and sunk another BB and some smaller ships (they sunk 2 BB on their initial strika).

What I did was this:
I created a emergency surface taskforce consisting of one fast CA, one fast CL and six destroyers (put them on reaction range 3) and then charged the KB taskforce at full speed in a night surface battle.

This cost me the CA, the CL and 4 DDs but I sunk the Tone and one jap DD. But most important I managed to land a bunch of shell hits in four of the six carriers (Hiryu was on fire).

The turn after the japs retreated launching a last extended strike with only half the number of planes, of which my cap at Pearl shot down a dozen.

When the KB reappeared in the Dutch territories a month later there where only 4 carriers, the others where in shipyards.
