[Fixed]f18 not bombing(no directors are able of iluminating)

Post by Martin11258 »

In this scenario I have a flight of 10 F18(Flight 1697) with orders to attack targets in Sidi Slimane AB, however none of the aircraft are dropping their bombs, it said no directors are able of iluminate this target. But as far as I know radar is not required to use GBU-24

I am pretty sure those are laser-designated. Check the database. If they are, make sure you don't have clouds between you and the target.

As thewood so aptly points out your aircraft are at 12k feet, smack in the middle of a moderate cloud layer, laser designation (and you do have them on board as part of the loadout) generally don't penetrate clouds, not moderate ones thousands of feet think anyway.

Weapon 466 GBU-24/B Paveway III LGB [bpg-2000 pgm cpe-800 penetrator]
Guidance Type: INS mid-course plus Semi-Active Laser Homing for terminal guidance.

The good news is they have buddy illumination. So bring one or two units in the flight down to like 6k to paint the targets for about 10-15seconds and the rest should drop from 12k.

From the db its a semi-active laser homing guidance with buddy illumination capability.

And from the manual:

"Cloud coverage affects line-of-sight for visual and IR sensors.
Light cloud coverage usually means scattered clouds at high
altitude; aircraft can get under the cloud base and still visually
acquire targets below, illuminate for LGBs etc. Thick cloud
coverage means thick clouds at all altitudes; LGB guidance may
be difficult or impossible unless the aircraft descends to low
altitude, and spotting is likewise degraded."

and...

"Semi-Active Laser Guidance: This is the classic laser guided
bomb, where the launcher paints the target with a laser
designator and the weapon homes in on the designator.
Some types of weapon can use “buddy lasing” (where an
aircraft or even a ground unit can designate the target while
the other drops from farther away)"

and...

"Progressively thicker
clouds have a progressively worse effect on EO and laser
sensors (including laser designators)"

and...

"Improved cloud and thermal layer indicators on throttle/
altitude window. This displays a series of indicators at
various altitudes indicated where the clouds/layers are. This
helps for determining say, the right altitude to fly a laser-guided bomb strike at, so that the designator isn’t blocked
by the cloud."

I think there are also several tutorials and videos on LGBs also.
