HQ questions Part 2

Post by DrZom »

I have observed the AI playing Allies will have a US HQ in the Pacific. The HQ typically has only one or two land units within its range. I question whether the benefit justifies the cost.

More to the point, does an HQ in a transport/amphibian craft exert any benefit to land units engaged in amphibious landings/combat? Does an HQ on land or at sea exert any benefit to naval units?

An HQ aboard an AV or AVL can't even be attached to any ground unit, so I doubt it. HQs confer no benefits to naval units at all.

Never take positioning tips from the AI. I have just seen it position half its Chinese Corps in the Gobi Desert, load up a load of AA and Heavy Artillery onto AVLs sitting off the coast of Scotland, and leave Zhukov and his elite troops defending Eastern Siberia against a lone Japanese garrison while the Germans storm the Caucasus....

As to the cost-benefit - well, it depends on the strategic role of those land units. If they are about to be involved in a crucial battle then giving them the HQ is a good move event if there are only 2 units involved.

And Platoonist has correctly answered regarding amphibs, BUT an HQ landing from an amphib gets some extra inherent supply - 10 the turn after it lands, then 8, 6, etc. This is crucial to effective landings if you can't easily capture a port intact.

Thank you both. You did confirm what I suspected, but I just had to ask.
