Join the tournament

Post by ledrobi »

Valor & Victory launches with tournament support: if you're looking to test your skills, you can sign up here and join the Operation Overlord tournament. All you need to do is sign up, then the system will pair you with opponents and create your PBEM games. You will be notified by mail of when the tournament is starting, and when it will be time to play your turns.

The tournament will start on July 1st, and it will include three rounds, each one lasting 21 days.

You will challenge your opponents in three scenarios:

June 6th, 1944 - St. Marie Du Mont, France
June 6th, 1944 - The Fight for Colleville, France
June 17th, 1944 - Battle of Douvres Radar Station, France

We'll do our best to make sure that everything runs smoothly - but being our first tournament, there is a limit of 50 players to allow us to troubleshoot potential issues.

====

As you may have noticed, the second round of the tournament just started, and we're running into some issues:
- No bye-points were assigned for being matched against players who did not show up.
- Inactive players got moved in the second round.

This is not intentional. This is the first tournament to use the new scoring system, so unfortunately some issues can happen. We're looking into them and we'll update you as soon as possible.

Is there a description of the scoring and rules anywhere?

Hi JonJonJon

YOu get points for units destroyed each turn and then at the game end you get points based on your victory level.

Thanks. What's the scoring situation when an opponent either doesn't turn up or doesn't finish the game?

Hi JonJonJon

I think they set it to you get 100 points if the player does not turn up. I am not actually sure what happens if someone starts the game and doesn't finish it. I will check.

Only 100 points for a default win? You should get the maximum amount of points in this case, especially since it's out of your control and not your fault.

Some folks are getting over 900 points in the first scenario, so just getting 100 points will not even give you a chance to compete.

I second that - currently the lowest score from a completed set is 174.

Be nice if my opponent would do his moves. Hasn't done a thing in 2 weeks.

So, no response from the developer or Slitherine tournament creators about the poorly balanced scoring for games where your opponent never played?

Hi FroBodine, This is the first tournament so we were unsure what scores players would get. The 100 points (200 points as its 2 games per round) are based on a minor victory. Right now if I look at the tournament table that would place someone at around 15th.

Not really fair to penalize a player if his opponent never shows up. My opponent did not even start. I may as well quit.

There was no bye score awarded.

Plus, the no-show players are in the games for the second round.

Why not let the players who played at least one move play each other in an extended R1? I don't really care what you do with the defaulters.

It's quite exploitable as it stands. My opponent has quit knowing full well there's no punishment for it, whereas I'll be missing out on the points I'd get for mowing down his units as they cross the open ground:

JonJonJon - I am guessing you are the Germans. If not, then what I'm saying is moot. Nobody in their right mind would cross that open ground just to let you "mow them down". You backed up, so you get what you get. A stalemate.

The scenario obviously wants both sides to be aggressive. I'm not saying the scenarios or game are perfect, they're absolutely not. The tournament scoring also has issues.

But, it's a war game, and you are expected to move forwards and do some war things. Not back up and hope the other player is a complete idiot to cross open ground to get to you.

You did this to yourself.

I think I will stick to the Field of Glory tournaments. I'm not great at that game, but the battles are so much more interesting.

This game is just way, way too basic. Maybe someday when a lot of stuff is added I'll play more. Until then, we have Lock 'n Load Tactical Digital with TONS and TONS of scenario and unit variety.
