Funny enough, I can't reproduce it yet.

Because it only happens now and then. It can work perfectly for a while and then bang, k-boom... [:D]

I worked long enough in technical support to know that this isn't caused by my computer. Even if it is something that is affected by the cache, it is only so because something is wrong in the Matrix Games end. What's more, the problem is intermittent and goes away without me taking any action whatsoever, is only limited to these forums (and perhaps the main website too), isn't affected by my internet connection, and so forth.

I've also noticed lately that the forums has at all times about 40k visitors, of which 39 900 are "guests". Which I assume are bots for the most part, which might very well be causing the issue.

What is also intermittent is the demand on your service provider and how any programs that you have are connecting to the internet.

You may not see it on other websites, but they might be slower to load.

Karri got it right. This is the definition of a 504 from https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... Status/504
504 Gateway Timeout

The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 504 Gateway Timeout server error response code indicates that the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not get a response in time from the upstream server that it needed in order to complete the request.

This problem is NOT my machine (which by the way is a clean linux install using firefox). And, BTW, I have 40 years of IT experience, and have spent way too many hours dealing with these kinds of problems.

I have had web pages trying to load for 25 minutes and I never got a time out error there while I did get one from Matrix a lot faster. The problem was on my end.

I forget if this is the same problem, but I've had chronic problems with the matrix (and only the matrix) forums for years. to fix it, usually I go to the little lock symbol on the far right of the address bar in Chrome, then delete all of the cookies from the Matrix site--usually there are more than 60 (!?) from Matrix. I assume that the cookies accumulate over time, and at some point they either choke the browser or the matrix server. either way, this is the only site that I've ever had this problem with, and it has been like this for years.

It can't be this. I reinstalled my Windows 10-soon-to-become-11 system a few weeks ago... and that has been happening to me... too little time for hundreds of cookies to accumulate. I tell you it's that evil Matrix!

It must be another error that I only encounter on Matrix's site then...I forget what the error number is though, because I haven't had it in several weeks now.

Yeah, I've been seeing this same Gateway 504 issue crop up on multiple devices whenever accessing this forum. It's annoying bordering on irksome.

You know, I never knew what people were talking about on this issue, since I had never seen it. I did get the board to hang up, though. But, when that happened, I just killed the browser and started over - always worked right on the second try.

Then, one day, recently, I decided to wait just to see what would happen. That's when, eventually, I finally got the above error.

So...why would anyone wait that long? When the browser hangs up, just exit and try again.

och silly us, should have realised there was an easily available ready solution [;)]

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for those having problems. The forums are so old they're written in a language that no longer exists and been modified so many times so held together with sticky tape, which means we regularly get something falling apart. We have finally found time to upgrade it and we're in the process of moving to PHPBB. It is a big job so I don't want to promise a completion date but it is in progress.

I wonder what language that is...
