Submarines doing shore support

Post by Nirosi »

Hi Alvaro,

My friend Villain tested it and it seems that submarines do provide shore support (and I can only guess that they use their surface factor to do so, and if yes, that would make them almost as good as heavy cruiser squadrons).

I can of course imagine a single submarine in an isolated place in Northern Norway getting very close to the shore and using its deck gun to help a small Royal Marine Commando Squad overwhelming a bunker protecting a strategic meteo or radar station. It would be heroic, almost unique, and would make a great movie.

But for a corps level wargame it is too close to fantasy so I can only guess it is either an oversight in the shore code when it implemented or a bug.

It is not a single submarine but 30+...so they could I guess do a little damage.'
But their surface is 4 in 39...and a cruiser is 7 if I remember...

Sorry my mistake; I looked a the 40 subs. So 4 vs 6. And 1942 subs would then be equal to 1939 cruisers. And of that "4", 3.8 or so are the torpedos most probably. Some countries even removed their subs gun before the end of war and some model never had any.

But still, one will never have 10-15 subs (or worse 30-45 if a stack of 3) very close to shore doing support. Quite a few could actually get sunk by artillery's guns or tanks! And it will still be so much much less than 2 heavy cruisers and their (DD?) escorts.[X(] Can not see how it can show in a corps level with each sub (at best) being basically a single, very exposed, gun... Well I agree...no one would send their subs near shore because they will get sunk...so the guns should not matter in that case.

I think subs should have almost no surface value...as I suspect they are counting their ability to also launch torpedoes while on the surface, which are not overly useful against land targets.

BUT I never use my subs for shore bombardment even though they can. They are too precious, at least Axis ones. Now Italian...I would use them to ram the beaches if I could.

Well for the FIRST time...I successfully used them.

Harrybanana had a massive UK fleet of CV, few BB / CA and 6 or so DD and a transport.
I sent them in and got 3 hits, 2 on a BB and 1 on a DD while taking only 4 damage.

Normally they just sink.

So maybe I am little to rough on them.
