New Scenario

Post by Cadillac »

Hey gang,

I love Command, but I don't have a lot of experience building scenarios. I've put my toe in the water a few times, but I'm still pretty basic when it comes down to it.

I've put this scenario together based on a book I read, and I thought I'd go ahead and just start making more of them based on these books. But, as I don't really know what I'm doing, I could use some help.

This is a basic sub stalking scenario with a US Submarine vs. a PLAN Convoy in 2024. The convoy has an ASW screen relying primarily on ASW Helos. It's a one deminsional scenario, and I'm just wondering what I can do to spice it up a bit. I hope that makes some sence.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this!

I'll check it out and report back.

Two quick comments:

1) Although not a requirement, it's common practice to add the year in which the scenario takes place in the file name, so this would be "Don't Mess with Texas, 2024". This is handy to identify the general tech era when browsing through a long scenario list.

2) Since this scenario features submarines, there should be biologics and/or false contacts, as well as some merchant traffic since the player is commanding a sub. Otherwise it makes things too easy for the Submarine and ASW forces to confidently go after any contact they see, which is hardly realistic.

I haven't checked the file yet but to add to HLE's comment, perhaps a passing merchant vessel or two. Maybe even a surface combatant from a neutral side pinging away with active sonar

Basic sub on sub scenarios can have a lot of down time where watching paint dry is an alternative, so anything to make the player consider different options etc

Trick with merchants, I use the Marine AIS tracker

https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/ho ... 23/zoom:16

to set up "shipping lanes" and run the ships back and forth along it. It gives the feel for normal shipping lanes but lowers the number of merchants.

Make sure they are "Blind" and I make them novices in the side settings.

I was wanting to play something I wasn't working on [:D] So I'll give this a go. Sounds low complexity.

Suggest you beef up the orders. The way many do it, the side briefing are the mission orders. Are the PLA(N) vessels headed for the Panama Canal? Around Cape Horn? What is the significance of the RPs? You read the book, but I didn't so what is obvious to you is a mystery to me. Thus the mission orders aspect of the side briefing.

Last known position of the convoy? Intel is tracking it and the US/NATO issued an ultimatum so it would be reasonable to give the CO of the Texas something to go on as to where to find and intercept the OPFOR. Right now I'm just spinning my wheels playing blind mans bluff. At least in Marco Polo I hear someone say Marco! [8D]

Also might add a few MPA P-8 Poseidon's and satellites. The Texas would receive tracking info from them.

No Contact.

Also the black box in the scoring says you haven't defined Victory conditions so you need to set some scoring (not that I would have scored anything! [:D] ).

Please feel free to look over any of my scenarios in the Scenario Editor and I'd be happy to answer any questions on what I've done that you may have. Not that I'm the greatest scenario designer (I'm not), but there is a steep learning curve. Even after years of designing I look at what others have done and learn from their work.

OK, running it again but this time I just added some US satellites. So now I had a SIGNET Satellite give me these signatures off of the ASW Helios. This is a large taskforce not a convoy!!!!!!

So NOW I have something to go on. I'm going to sprint SE to get ahead of the TF and then drift to hopefully let them get into range were I have some targeting info on the ships.

Edited: Never mind bad suggestion! Tried my suggestion and it doesn't work.

Never used the Orca's before but was able to hit one of the High Value Units with one of their Tomahawks slowing down the Task Force. Something was wrong with the WRA and no PLA(N) SAMs engaged the Tomahawks. Given the units available should have been a wall of missiles engaging them.
