Updater never works for me either...on any game. The only thing ever updated is the updater!

The first time the updater tries to get the update, it asks for a firewall permission. When you don't approve it then, it will not be asked again, and the only way is to manually give the permission in the firewall.

This is with the standard Windows firewall. Maybe if you use more aggressive protection software, the question is not even asked in the first place.

Don't think I've ever been asked for firewall permission & it doesn't stop any of the updaters from updating themselves but never updating their purpose.
I'll give it a go next time however. Where ever I can I purchase from Matrix & hope for a Steam release, where automatic updates are the go.
