Stay or evacuate?

Post by Axe1999 »

Playing DBBs Grand Campaign, in April '42 I have an issue, looking for advice.

Japanese landed in Milne Bay 6 weeks ago under heavy coastal fire and decided to dig in and bombard for the next 6 weeks. Since then it became a black hole for reinforcements for both sides, and now on 1st April '42 opposing AVs are around 400:400, with my troops being mostly CMF Aussies and coastal batteries. I cannot really sustain any more forces there since supplying them is hard and troops are needed elsewhere, so my question is, do I let them have Milne Bay? Ideally I would hold it since it really chokes Solomon Sea and its important strategic point.

Any thoughts?

Dug in and supplied, in that terrain, he will need a lot to take it. So make him work hard to do so, he is better stuck there than free to move on.

Milne Bay is a good spot to have, but not critical. If you still have Port Moresby and have built up the airfield you should be able to suppress Milne Bay.

I am not sure if DBB gives either side extra goodies, but if the Japanese are stronger than in stock you might not be able to keep MB or PM. Much depends on how thin the Japanese spread themselves to take more territory in SOPAC.

It also depends upon human or AI.

In my opinion, if you are playing vs AI, you are not really playing the game. In my last WITP campaign vs AI, stopped playing at USN in Feb 1942 as I had sunk/crippled half of the IJN CV fleet using Dutch and Australians around Java. Vs Humans, I struggle to stay in the game.

I suggest that you try Ironman 3 on very hard.

it doesn't make the AI any smarter, it just gives it more stuff and more advantages

Its against AI, dont really have time for PBEM, and on this run, with restricting myself massively I think I will get more out of the game come 1943 than I would before. Decided to hold on to it for now, with US 32nd Inf Division in reserve in need of a backup for Aussies. P39 on strafing from Milne Bay may be just a bit too good in constricting shipping few hexes around, I may stop using them like that.

It also depends upon what AI version that one is playing against. There are newer AIs.
