Unit Event Placement

Post by redrum68 »

If I specify multiple units at a DESTINATION_RESOURCE what hexes does the order go around the resource hex? Example would be if I list 10 units at a resource location that has no units on or near it then which 10 hexes and in what order would the units appear? Is there any limit to the number of units that can be placed at a resource location or does it just keep looking for the next closest hex?

Yes, the placement position goes in the following order based on available hexes:

The designated hex
Northeast hex adjacent to it
Southeast hex
South hex
Southwest hex
Northwest hex
North hex

Essentially, after the destination hex, it starts at the Northeast hex and works itself around clockwise.

I would strongly suggest adding more than one DESTINATION_RESOURCE so that if all the units cannot be deployed at the first resource, they will deploy at the alternative(s).

However, a maximum of 7 can be placed per script, assuming all terrain around the DESTINATION_RESOURCE is accessible land. If not, e.g. it is on the coast, then the maximum is less.

What happens if units start to go to the second ring from the DESTINATION_RESOURCE? It doesn't seem to follow the same pattern of starting from the Northeast hex.

Actually after testing this a bit, if there isn't enough space to place all the units around the DESTINATION_RESOUCE and another DESTINATION_RESOURCE isn't listed then it appears to jump to a nearby resource and try to place units there. But it seems kind of random in what resource it jumps to and doesn't appear to set units in the same order of Northeast hex first then clockwise. Any idea how the logic works if it jumps to another resource?

Hi Redrum,

Looks like the arrival order is the following:

Northeast
Southeast
Southwest
Northwest
North
South

I had previously misrepresented this order to Bill as I too thought it was a perfect clockwise order starting with the Northeast hex.

However, jumping to the next DESTINATION RESOURCE position should have no effect, e.g. it should start again in the order I have listed above unless those hexes are inapplicable, or already have a unit on it.

If you have an example test where it doesn't do this I'd be happy to take a look,
Hubert

Hey Hubert. Actually my question was if there isn't another DESTINATION_RESOURCE listed then where does it jump to? An example would be say in the 1939 campaign if I have 7 units in and around Lwow (blocking all the hexes there) then where would the Barbarossa script set the 6 Lwow units?

It should go to the next nearest valid resource relative to the DESTINATION RESOURCE, and I believe cycle through each DESTINATION RESOURCE position listed until a location is found.

Ok. That's what I thought but doesn't seem to be the case. It seems a bit random on what resource it goes to next and number/location of the units placed around that resource. Here is a test I ran from the Barbarossa Bialystok units where I blocked all the hexes around Bialystok, have a corps in Brest, and a unit in Kowel and southwest of it. This leads to the following placement order:
1. HQ southeast of Brest
2. Corps north of Brest
3. Corps northwest of Kowel
4. Mech north of Kowel
5. Fighter south of Brest

So it seems to jump between resources, not order them like it does for the first resource, and not even pick the closest resources as Wilno/Kaunas are both closer than Kowel to Bialystok.
