A TOAW4 wiki

Post by dduckett »

Update: wiki was taken down in Nov 2021

As a forum lurker, I keep thinking TOAW4 would benefit from a community wiki that would combine things like:
* Citizen manual (both gameplay and scenario editor portions)
* Tutorials on how to play (such as those made by the community)
* Scenarios and recommend rules to play them on
Etc.

The idea of a wiki for this game was mentioned in older post on this forum--I think the game would benefit from consolidated and up-to-date information in a more organized way than the forum allows.

For other gaming communities, MediaWiki has worked well, though I don't know much about hosting wikis or anything (I am aware there are likely hosting costs involved, depending on the wiki platform used). Anyways, a passing thought and curious what other's think.

I like Anne Hathaway. She was a Catwoman in one of the Batman films. Meow! And in Interstellar she is very good. She did a Lip-sync Battle with another favorite of mine, Emily Blunt. I would never otherwise watch that show but it was a lot of fun with those two.

+1 for the wiki

Mind boggling that after 20 years we still mosey along in our horse-drawn carriage,
while the rest of the folks speed along the superhighway to our left.

dduckett,

I think what Steve and Larry are saying is that 'someone' would need to get the ball rolling and then if it's done mostly right, others will chime in. So if this your passion, start it up and let us know where its at and eventually others will provide content, corrections or inspirational insights...

At least that is my take on how things have progressed here and there over the years...

I created www.wargamewiki.com which runs on MediaWiki (what Wikipedia uses). Right now, anyone can make edits and create pages without having to make an account (though uploading and inserting images requires creating an account). If spam becomes an issue, it may become editable only by users with accounts, but I'd prefer it be open to edit and so am starting that way.

I have moved the TOAW IV community manual into the wiki. In doing so, I reorganized/renamed some sections, put information into tables for readability, supplemented some content with screenshots, removed many section references numbers and replacing them with textual interwiki links, converted text equations into formatted equations, etc.

The pages still need more organization (e.g., I pulled out game calculations to its own page, but it has content in it that are other parts of the appendix), there are still section number references to replace with wiki links, but it's getting there.

The page that still has a lot of stray scenario numbers is 'Creating Scenarios' (covering the scenario editor). I welcome everyone to have a look and make edits.

Who ever has TOAW power please sticky and put this link up in the header.

https://www.wargamewiki.com/wiki/index. ... rgame_Wiki

We can all collaborate on making much better and up to date documentation if we all work together on this.

Wiki updates:
* Added a sortable table of TOAW IV out-of-box scenarios to help find scenarios by data such as complexity, designer, which are PBEM vs PO, etc.: https://www.wargamewiki.com/wiki/index. ... _Scenarios
* Screenshots have been added to parts of community manual to help explain content.
* Because of issues I've had with spam, if you want to edit, you now have to both create a wiki account and request permissions to edit.

For some scenarios, it was not explicitly stated if there was a PO, I did not specify one existed (though I think it does for many of them). If a scenario had PO for both sides but did not mention PBEM, then I did not specify PBEM, though I would think most scenarios with a PO probably have PBEM?

Hi all, I have hosted this wiki using my own money for about a year--mostly to serve as a community manual, but I am doubtful it gets referenced much (if at all) and I don't have much time to put into it, so am planning to close my hosting account down for this.

Thank you governato, I appreciate that! It took a lot of time over a holiday break to go pull in the community manual content that others here created, format it (the math equations, headings, organization), and then update the links from section numbers into descriptive links, plus supplementing with screenshots.

Part of me hates to take it down because of the effort already invested, so I'm still considering whether to leave it up (I have until November to decide). Part of me thought I was probably the only one referencing it when I was playing :) I also combined efforts with another forum member on the sortable out-of-box scenario list. I have not been able to game as much lately, so that's part of the reason I have not been updating content.

Because I don't do any Google Analytics tracking or anything, I have no idea how much it is used. All I know is that spammers create accounts regularly on it at a rate of about 10 or so a day :) Haha.

You can create a website for free at Wix.com. Then you could host the stuff there.

I might be able to host it on one of my sites...how big is it? I'll be busy the next month or so, but let's get in touch in early October to see if we can figure things out.

Thanks 76mm, it is ~500MB.
