OT-Just ordered the Pacific War 2nd Edition P500

Post by Rising-Sun »

Wasnt sure if anyone still plays the board game, that old Pacific War and now they have 2nd Edition coming out soon. Believe this is from GMT Games, so dont get mix up with the other one. Forgot to mention, this one is from Mark Herman, believe the same for Empire of the Sun too. I got that one ordered as well. Probably with this new 2nd Edition, the map is almost upside down, kinda weird setup to get use to it.

Just checking, some of you guys might like to check this out as well.

I still have the original Victory Games edition and an unopened Japanese knockoff (at least I think it is). I was able to play the VG one only once during my entire ownership with a friend face to face in Scotland. Had it setup in a dorm room (otherwise unoccupied) for over a year and was able to get to November of 1942! All those counters and so little time! However I must admit that I enjoy the computer version so much better. When I knock the computer over, none of the board pieces move a dot!!!! Hal

You will be O.K. with the map it just does not have the far reaching scope of WITP-AE.
(Picture of original map below)

I have the original from Victory Games that I bought in 1986 when I was in college.

It takes a large room to set up and for all practical real life situations the strategic scenario is unplayable.
Thick stacks of cardboard counters. I would not attempt to set it up now since I have a cat.

Although, when I was in the Seabees on Guam during the First Gulf War I had my girlfriend
(Now my Wife) send it to me and I played it with the battalion supply officer.

That was the perfect situation to play this game.
The two of us held captive on a Pacific island by a war in the Middle East.

So, if you can arrange for that situation you should be good to go.

It's been sent to the printers according to GMT.

Current hope is November but in this world of delays, better to anticipate next year.
I know I saw this on internet somewhere so it must be true.

I played the original extensively, it is a great game.

Noticed, on the youtube when they preorder it and it was couple years ago and it was around 800 or so. Look like it will be end of this year or the next. Not sure what kinda of machines they have, but that alot of counters and the box is four inches thick!

Its gorgeous and I wish I could play that game. I own it but its just too big to set up in my home.

For anyone not familiar that's the map for Decision Games' War in the Pacific. The upcoming GMT Pacific War map is just 2 22x34 mapsheets.

I prefer the original SPI map by Redmond Simonsen to the Decision redo. His slightly greyish colour shades on the green jungle, and blue water are evocative of a hazy February day on the Coral Sea.
