Air losses.

Can you sustain such losses like 75 Mustangs in one day? When you've emptied the pool I'd say no, not for a bombing run like this even though you kept the CAP away from the B-29. Why not just use the B-29 on night bombing? That's been pretty much a 1:1 in fighters and just looking at this I'd cheer as the Japanese because you just don't have thousands of advanced fighters and your opponent should have if he wasn't bombed into the stone age in early 44 already.

It sure is a lot! The took 104 enemy with them, but still it is a lot.

I've been doing both night and day bombing, and switching targets around, to motivate him to concentrate CAP less and pull as many fighters as possible back from the front lines elsewhere.

Day bombing has the problem you describe. Night bombing has the problems of: 1) not concentrating hits on important targets; 2) many bombers stray due to night and fail to find their targets at all (this in addition to the usual weather issues).

When it comes to bomber losses, I'm concerned about losses compared to how effective the raid was rather than bomber losses compared to enemy fighter losses.

I usually have 2/3 of my fighter and fighter bomber units in backwaters for training so we're talking about way over 1000 pilots in training just for the IJAAF and just for fighters. Takes three months on average to reach "trained" level so do the math. If there isn't much use for bomber units you can even increase these numbers if you train def skill in bomber units after they have reached 70 air skill. Switching pilots between bomber and fighter units usually reduces exp by 0-3 so that means nothing either.

Add in the IJNAF fighters... those can be even trained in floatplanes (both air and def). The only limit are the hardcoded replacement rates, some 600+ for the IJAAF and 400+ for the IJNAF from 43 on. Now go and kill those possible 500 trained IJAAF/IJNAF fighter pilots when you lose 75 Mustangs in one day of battle. [;)] When my last campaign ended in mid 45 I had several thousand fully trained pilots in the pool and the IJAAF still had 5-6000 replacement pilots in the pool. IJNAF replacement pool was empty.

A Japanese player that wasn't totally pushed to the limits in 42 already should be able to a) outproduce the Allied in advanced airframes until mid 45 and b) never run out of trained pilots. Of course everything looks different when the Allied are succesfully knocking on the inner perimeter of the Japanese defense very early on but that would mean being at least 1.5 years ahead of the historic advance. Then the Japanese would neither have the units and the time to train nor the oil/fuel/supply to ramp up R&D and production of late war.

Pretty much all depends on the IJ advance in 42/43 IMHO.

I am hoping to fit in two raids before the Daito Shoto invasion, for which the B-29's will close the airfields at Naha and Nago in concert with fighter sweeps from Iwo-jima.

Yokohama/Yokosuka. Only a small amount of damage evident so far. Fires peaked at 68544 and were reported near that several times, so I'm sure lots more damage will show up.
