France Surrender in Europe, Commander at War

Can anyone tell me why France surrendered?

Here's what happened. My opponent is playing Axis and it is the summer of 1940. He has taken Denmark, Holland, and has invaded England and Belgium. The invasion of England is not going well, but the Germans have taken one non-port city with paratroopers. The allies are sitting pretty. The Brits have all but stamped out the German invasion, and the allies control nearly all of Belgium. The allies has suffered minimal casualties. Then in July 1940, the Axis invades southern France from Italy. I left Paris ungarrisoned, but it is in no danger. The Axis takes Nice, the only city in all of France that they control, and suddenly France surrenders for no apparent reason!!!!! Does anyone know why?
