Splitting/recombining division

Post by panzer51 »

So what is the proper labelling for that? oes ot have to follow
1/10th Div
2/10th Div
3/10th Div

or can it be any numbers , say 12/10th Div, 11th/10 Div 15th/10 Div? Anybody knows?

names are irrelevant, relevant ist the data conection of the three to each other. For the merged name relevant is the split unit treated as parent/master unit.

Sorry I'm not following. For example, 10th Rum Division and 8th Rum Division start split. So can I recombine 1/8, 1/10 and 2/10? I looked in the editor and i don't actually see any connection between 1/10, 2/10 and 3/10.

Each division splits in 3 regiments.
So Division X splits in 1/X, 2/X and 3/X.
These 3 precise regiments must be recombined to form up Division X.

Ok but i can't figure out how to break it in editor, and i can't see any link between the existing parts.

I believe you can't split Axis minor units.
GC41 starts with multiple split security divs
In Editor/Units you have a button "attached units" on the bottom left, click on it to see the data connection these split units have to each other. the parent unit has links to 3 while the non-parents have a link just to the parent

Thanks. So do you have to create three units first and then link them?

If the Division is frozen it must be unfrozen first. Then you can use the button (next to fortify) to break it down or build it up.

What kind of division? Not all nation's divisions can be split. I dont think rumanian, Soviet and hungarian infantry divisions may be split. The manual may reference which ones may and may not be split. Sometimes I run across strange situations in which the editor won't allow me to split German divisions for some reason. When this happens, I clear out the editor unit entry and replace it with a fresh entry. That usually fixes the problem.

Rumanian and Slovakian divisions will split and recombine. I have done it. To split or recombine a Division it must have a movement point and not be frozen. All Rumanian ground units are frozen at start. In the editor unfreeze the division, (right unit screen click on freeze set to zero) go to the off map unit box and assign its movement points (including SMP) and then return to map. Stack regiments and make sure all are highlighted and it will combine. Same procedure to split. Happy editing.

I tried to split German 50th ID I think. I'll check for this tonight though.

The 50th ID is part of the 11th Army. It is frozen. It must be unfrozen by clicking on the 50th ID right hand information box, clicking on the freeze label and setting it to zero. Then go to the editor 'units' tab and provide the 50th ID movement points by clicking on the movement bar. Infantry is 16 MP and 200 SMP. Go to map. If the 50th ID shows movement it can be split. Set the unit to freeze for one turn or it may cause the South front to activate. I hope this helps.

Yeah you were right, it was frozen. Incidentally, you can't break down cavalry brigades. There must be some number below which it's not breaking the unit.

Can you imagine the chaos of breaking down regiments/brigades? The map is cluttered as it is. More than once I have had regiments of a division split and it took forever to find them and join them again. Or I stacked the wrong regiments and they refused to combine. Or regiment is shattered/destroyed and the division lost. Anyway I hope you find it useful to split your divisions when you need them split.

I see your point, but both sides historically used Kampfgruppe. Germans were notorious in creating formations from units pulled out from various divisions. Ideally i would prefer to have regiment size game where you can break divisions down and form various groups for different purposes.

I understand, agree and acknowledge there is opportunity in what you state.
