My big plan for western China just isn't working. I can't break through in the mountains by Kunming. Will now resort to constant bombardments instead of attacks, but that won't work either. As long as OPilot can keep swapping in a fresh corps occasionally, we are stopped. I will start a very slow flanking maneuver northeast of Kunming. That won't work unless OPilot panics and evacuates Kunming. Doubtful. And there won't be a threat for over a month.

40 Zeros intercepted 16 Hurricanes sweeping near Kalemyo. OPilot has been showing ground movement into this hex, but nothing yet. I've seen the intended movement, and he knows that I've seen it. I have 1/3 of a Japanese division on the south side of the river. May or may not be enough for a defense. Anyhow, the Hurricanes got the better of the fight, coming in high. But then bombers arrived, without escorts. Wellingtons and B-25Cs attacked, then more Wellingtons and Blens. Some Zeros were still flying, and many bombers were shot down. Total air losses were 17 Blens, 13 Wellingtons, 6 B-25Cs and 6 Hurricane IIb's for the cost of 17 Zeros.
With KB threatening Norfolk Island, OPilot pulled his fighters and bombers out. So I bombed with 21 Sallys and did moderate base damage. Damaged a few planes on the ground.
New offensive to begin south of Sian.

Bettys bombed the airfield on Cocos Island, doing moderate damage and hitting some Martlets on the ground. No enemy shipping seen in the area.
Lots of US medium and light bombers hit Japanese troops south of Daly Waters, in clear terrain. The troops have given up on the pursuit of the enemy to the south, and are heading north. Clear terrain so it's easy bombing. I did have some Zeros on LRCAP from Katherine, but I was protecting an armor unit just to the west of where the bombers showed up. P-40s did sweep that bombed hex also.
I opened up a new offensive in China, south of Sian, coming from Nanyang. The first attack wasn't great but we should break through here. The biggest obstacle is the wooded terrain all the way to Sian. OPilot has a strong defense here early in the war. I made a very early push here but the terrain prevented a move to Sian. OPilot has stripped quite a bit from this front, pulling units out to go to other threatened areas of China. I'm hopeful for a push to Sian, although my fairly limited. Besides what is in this attack, reinforcements include a division cutting in from the east, and a half disabled division resting at Nanyang. But the enemy is far worse off.

KB stayed hidden east of Koumac and refueled. It will now move to the northwest of Luganville. My gut instinct is telling me that OPilot sees my strength in the South Pacific and will make his first big move somewhere else. Maybe the Marshalls. Maybe the Aleutians. I got 3 separate heavy activity messages at Pearl Harbor today. And I see a battleship force on the way to presumably bombard Adak Island.
I will stay prepared at Luganville and Noumea, but I may move KB to the Marshalls or even to the Aleutians. My number one priority is to get the US carriers while the Japanese have an advantage. I will go anywhere to make that happen.

The 87th Mountain Regiment invaded Atka Island in the Aleutians. Atka is 2 hexes east of Adak Island, which is my main Japanese base in the Aleutians. Atka had originally been Allied owned and minimally occupied earlier in the war. OPilot evacuated it with my push into the Aleutians. It flipped to the Japanese. Now the Americans are back. Atka is a size 1 port and has no airfield. I moved Sallys and Zeros to hit the enemy troops, then hit the port after the undefended base is lost.
Bettys and Nells bombed Horn Island, with an Oscar sweep. No CAP. ACM General Frank was sunk in the port, which took moderate damage. The airbase was heavily damaged. Clear terrain at Horn.
Magwe got 4 squadrons of Hurricanes sweeping, higher than my 40 or so Oscars on CAP. It was a massacre. 25 Oscars lost and just 2 Hurricanes shot down. Some oil lost when B-24s bombed. Flak was heavy though. The oil will be lost at Magwe over time. I can't commit 3 or 4 air units to protect it against so many fighters. It's just too close to India. I'll take whatever oil I can get for as long as I can.
With 2 Japanese divisions about to move into Myitkyina, the Allied troops left it, going north to the dot base in the adjacent hex. Thai troops and one Japanese division will follow. The other Japanese division will move to Myitkyina and then rail back to the west.
The new push towards Sian from the south continues. This is the second attack in two days, and the enemy is breaking.

Sallys from Amchitka bombed US troops invading Atka Island, doing minor damage. 21 Wildcats intercepted. The Wildcat unit had been split into 3 parts, creating a stacked CAP at 30000, 20000 and 15000 feet. Even so, although they intercepted the Sallys at 6000 feet, they didn't actually engage them. Zeros were supposed to escort the Sallys but did not. A CVE was spotted in the invasion convoy. Today the Zeros will sweep Atka Island, which flipped to the Allies. Subs hope to find the CVE if it returns to Diamond Harbor.

KB is moving, undetected, to the Nauru Island area, west of the Marshalls. My gut is still telling me that the Marshalls is the place to be. We'll lurk there with a battleship TF and some AOs. If the US carriers go to the Aleutians for a big amphibious push, I won't be able to stop that right now. With 3 SigInt heavy activity messages at Pearl Harbor yesterday, I think that something big is on the way. OPilot wouldn't send the US carriers back to Pearl just to return back to the South Pacific. That's why I think it's the Marshalls or the Aleutians. And he just did a small invasion in the Aleutians, with his big CVs, so I rank the Aleutian's chances lower. I want to ambush the US carriers, and will continue to burn fuel to do so.

Zeros in the Aleutians swept Atka Island, but the enemy TF with a small carrier had left. B-26s bombed Adak Island, doing minor damage. My Zeros are based further west.
B-17Es from Cloncurry continue to plaster the airbase at Daly Waters. I will not defend in the air though. I will defend Katherine.

I made a big effort at Kunming, send all of the bombers in the area to hit the light industry there. About 150 bombers damaged a whole 2 light industry in moderate rain. Disappointing. I think I need to take out the LI to hurt the supply situation at Kunming itself. It has heavy industry too, but I'm assuming that the fuel situation in China is critically low, so I won't hit the HI.
Allied light bombers hit the 1st Ind. Tank Co near Daly Waters, severely disabling it.
KB is still not spotted, now west of Tarawa. Whatever enemy ships were poking around SE of Tabiteuea yesterday were not seen today. Probably a destroyer probing mission.
I'll wait to see what's next for the US carriers. There has been absolutely no heavy SigInt activity messages since the triple message at Pearl Harbor days ago. My experience tells me that the US carriers, and maybe lots of other TFs, are on the move. All just a guess, of course. They could be going anywhere or upgrading or doing nothing at Pearl Harbor. But I've given myself an opportunity to ambush in the Marshalls, if I guess right.

RO-62 misses a golden opportunity at Dutch Harbor. The sub slipped into the harbor, braving any mines that might be there, and fired 2 torpedoes at AKE Mobile City, but missed. Enemy ships moving west from Dutch Harbor again. I'm moving Vals to the Aleutians but they'll only get to Attu today. Short legs.
Sent the Japanese bombers to Kunming again, bombing the light industry. Light rain but got 24 damaged light industry, so better results this time. It will continue.
Wirraways and A-24s hit the tank company near Daly Waters again. Set up LRCAP over the unit for today.
Bombarded at Tuyun for the first time in a long while. The enemy is still strong but it looks like I can get some results with bombardments. I really wanted a breakthrough here but that wasn't going to happen. I may try again later but it looks pretty hopeless, despite no supply for the Chinese.

3 SigInt messages with heavy activity at Pearl Harbor again. Maybe it's just a busy place! Seriously, I do think something is up in the Central Pacific. Just guesswork for now. KB continues to hang out NW of Tarawa, unspotted.

RE: Deja Vu All Over Again - apbarog(J) vs OPilot(A)
When playing as Japan I gave up even looking at sigintel years ago. I found it worse than useless.....leads to wild goose-chases!!
I'm guessing that with his CV situation he won't risk much of anything until the new CVs/CVLs start flowing like saki. Perhaps the only thing that would draw remaining CVs out is a threat he could not ignore.
I wonder where Enterprise would have limped to?

I missed my golden opportunity to take out the US carriers with my Auckland raid earlier in the war. Got into perfect position, the US carriers were in task forces at Auckland, not much fighter cover, and bad weather prevented my strikes. Since then, I've continued to try to get them. It may lead to wild goose chases. At least it shows that I'm willing to sneak through enemy lines, making my opponent more cautious in more areas of the map.
I don't know what kind of threat would be one he could not ignore. I think he can ignore just about anything I could do at this point. He knows his reinforcements are coming and his highest priority should be to preserve his carriers, or at least not to lose them without taking some Japanese carriers out.

I'd moved a cruiser group to the west of Noumea, in a spot that could imply a bombardment of Norfolk Island. The ships were spotted, as expected. Just showing that I'm still in the South Pacific. KB is not though.
Battleship Maryland and cruiser Raleigh bombarded Adak Island, doing minor damage. Now that I saw an AKE in the Aleutians, this will become more frequent I'm afraid. 9 Vals will be in the area and will set up for naval attack in a couple of days.
Another big Japanese bomber strike hitting the light industry at Kunming netted just a couple of damaged factories. The weather was good, so I can't blame that.
I did trap the Allied light bombers in Australia, when Wirraways and A-24s tried to bomb my small tank company near Daly Waters. A6M3 Zeros shot down just about every bomber, getting 13 A-24s and 7 Wirraways.

Just one light industry hit with over 120 Japanese bombers hitting Kunming. Severe storms. The effort will continue, with some bombers occasionally changing to airfield attack to keep the base damaged.
Big attack east of Lanchow. Not great. Could have been worse if it had been 1 to 3 odds, which it almost was.

Not having a higher HQ contributing to the battle is noticeable. That's an area of my game that I've learned more about this time around. I would do better next time. The force multiplier effect can make a big difference.
One division is mostly disabled now, and will pull back a hex to rest and guard the flank. All units have high disruption from the shock attack and need a few days off.

I-5 arrived on patrol way up north on the map edge, west of Karachi. It immediately found xAK Daisy Moeller, sinking the ship with a torpedo. Later in the day, it found xAK Admiral Chase, hitting it with 4 torpedoes and 4 shells, sinking it. Intel reports 12 Dutch 139WH-3s lost. I-5 will now move towards Karachi, figuring that any remaining enemy ships will do the same.
Massive bombing of Kunming's light industry again nets just 1 factory damaged. Severe storms. We continue to try to hit the LI.

OPilot went after Mandalay, seeing no Japanese fighters there. I had a few recon planes and a big transport unit that was flying supply to Tsuyung. Many Hurricanes swept and then B-24s hit the airfield, doing moderate damage and destroying a Topsy. Mandalay is not a priority for me.
I-19 spotted the tanker convoy north of Male and missed TK Inge Maersk with 4 torpedoes. In this encounter, 2 tankers were spotted with a single PC for escort. A later mouseover showed more ships in the convoy.
At Tuyun, where I had hoped to break through the Chinese line a month ago, I've switched to bombarding every day, and I'm generally getting good results. 203 casualties with some squads destroyed. I'm not going to break through with just bombardments, but it is taking a toll and tying down 6 Chinese corps there.
The river crossing into Yenan occurred. The 2 smaller Japanese units that were already there were not set to attack. Results were good. Still not 100% decided that I will finish off the Chinese, not wanting the corps to respawn. If I take Sian, Yenan isn't as important for pulling in supply to the area. Waiting for disruption to come down, then I'll make a final decision.

Destroyers Yugure and Ariake found the tanker convoy that they had been tracking, and the tankers were carrying fuel as expected.
Day Time Surface Combat, near North Male at 18,44, Range 3,000 Yards
Japanese Ships
DD Yugure
DD Ariake, Shell hits 3, heavy fires
Allied Ships
PC Sutlej, Shell hits 14, and is sunk
TK Fenris, Shell hits 21, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
TK Ferncastle, Shell hits 12, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
TK India, Shell hits 10, heavy fires, heavy damage
TK Pan Scandia, Shell hits 4, and is sunk
TK Inge Maersk, Shell hits 23, heavy fires, heavy damage
Reduced visibility due to Thunderstorms
Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms: 3,000 yards
Ariake is SYS 51/FLOT 26-7/ENG 26-1/FIRE 6 and can move just 4 hexes per day. The odds of escape are very low. Yugure has a better shot at getting back to Sabang, but I expect a strong response to come out of Colombo, and it's obvious where to go to cut off the Japanese destroyers.
A busy day with the subs.
Up north, west of Karachi, I-5 hit xAP Dunera with a torpedo. The sub sank 2 cargo ships yesterday.
West of Perth, I-165 sank PC Netravati with a torpedo. The patrol boat was escorting an AVP that was hit with a dud torpedo by the sub yesterday. No sign of the AVP today. It will make it to Perth.
I-176 moved into Dutch Harbor, knowing that there were a lot of US ships there yesterday. Destroyer McCalla went after the sub after 2 torpedoes missed the destroyer. No depth charges hit, but there were many near misses. I-176 is SYS 49/FLOT 21-0/ENG 0/FIRE 0.
Japanese troops moved into Sian from the southeast. I erroneously thought that it would be a river crossing. It was not. An attack is ordered for today.

Not having adequate search set up at Male made the adventure possible. This will make OPilot more cautious, and that is always one of my highest priorities in a game.

Scuplin fired 2 torpedoes at huge xAP Aikoku Maru at Lautem, Timor. Torpedoes missed. The convoy is carrying an infantry division from Darwin to Singapore, destined to go to Port Blair.
Port Moresby got the treatment. First it was bombarded:
Night Naval bombardment of Port Moresby at 98,130
Japanese aircraft
no flights

Very good bombardment. I had just moved planes into Port Moresby, guessing that the B-17s that had been bombing in central Australia would find something else to do. 2 Nicks and 2 Zeros were destroyed on the ground. But fortunately, the airfield was not knocked out of action, and the B-17s did appear. With B-26s.
At first, a dozen Nicks and a dozen Zeros went after 36 B-26s and 9 B-17Fs. Bombers were downed and minor base damage done. Then 12 more B-17Fs and 12 Marauders. Then another dozen B-26s. And 9 more B-17Fs. Get used to it. Many big Allied bases in range in Australia. It will only get worse.
The Japanese fighters did very well against the Marauders, downing 23 of them. 2 B-17Fs were also shot down. 2 Nicks and a Zero went down against the bombers. Good result, considering the bombardment.

High fort levels. Now it's a race to take Sian before Chinese reinforcements arrive from the east and the northeast. I don't think I'll win this race. 4 units are now in the adjacent hex to the east. They will be bombed, in clear terrain, and some will probably be slowed. I have to rest today, for resupply. If the next attack doesn't take the city, and I don't think it will, Sian will be reinforced and become a stalemate. The difference here is that the front to the northeast and east is collapsing, so eventually, more Japanese units will make it to the area. I predict that I will eventually take Sian, primarily due to the clear terrain. I can bomb it at will.
The 2 Japanese destroyers west of Ceylon were spotted by Catalinas today but not engaged. The damaged one is moving 4 hexes a day and probably will be hunted down. At least its fire was put out.

RE: Deja Vu All Over Again - apbarog(J) vs OPilot(A)

Enemy task force, with just 1 ship spotted, moved to within 7 hexes of an unspotted KB, but Japanese bombers did not fly.
