4th Campaign game

Post by morganparker »

Hello everyone:

This is my first post, I have lurked for a long time.

I bought the game in early 2016 and only play against the AI. After learning on the scenarios, I started playing the campaign game about 1 ½ years ago, the first CG lasted 3 days game time, the next about 3 weeks game time and this third CG is at 1 1/3 years game time, 1 day turns, historical.

In a few more weeks I will be ready to start a 4th CG, I will play that one at the hard/very hard level.

So, my question is, in a CG against the AI, what “scenario/mod” would you choose for an interesting historical game.

I am looking for a “historical simulation,” since what I enjoy most about games is learning about places, ships and planes. I understand that I have to let the AI have its historic expansion at the beginning.

I am planning using Andy Mac’s just upgraded Scen 7 and using Andrew Brown’s updated map.

I will “copy” that Scenario so I can make some modifications to it in Editor. In particular I want to have the US torpedoes be more realistic and will copy that from Big Bs mod. Plus, I had an uncle in the 57th Seabees. I wasn’t able to find his unit which shipped out on 3/9/43 from Port Huemene on the SS Del Brasil, so I want to make sure his unit appears by renaming another Seabee unit.

I have considered using Dababes Lite, (Sarduaker’s favorite) and started reading in the forum about the “RHS” mod, but from my review couldn’t find an “reviews” or AARs of it.

By way of background, I been a wargamer since my aunt gave me Tactics II in 1962. I have played solitaire all the scenarios and the campaign game of SPI’s WITP (as well as War in the East and War in the West and the entire Europa series) multiple times. However, this is the first computer war game that I have played, (I got the first Grimsby game on the 3 1/2 floppies but the graphics couldn’t match the 40 plus square feet of SPI’s WITP).

Thanks for any insights.

Welcome. As far as the seebees go just copy and paste instead of renaming. Sounds like you have a scenario so enjoy....GP

Scen 7 is "Quiet China" and none of those scenarios (7,8,9) have EVER been updated. Do not use them. It sounds like you play as the Allies and you are a moderately experienced player. Accordingly you'll get more enjoyment from a more capable Japanese AI opponent, so I highly recommend the Scen 10 Ironman. It's not completely historical, obviously, but it's close enough (no fantasy unit types, just more stuff and thus yes, additional ships you've never heard of). Babes Lite is very good, but the Japanese player doesn't get anything extra and it has an older AI.

If you feel comfortable with editing, I also recommend that you permanently nerf the Dutch sub and US S-type sub torpedoes. Those things are true ship killers, all war long, and that was NEVER the case. If you are making your fleet subs more capable than they truly were, at least go with the historical offset.

Edit: I'm off to an internet-less location for a few weeks and thus won't be able to respond to any questions or comments. Good luck with the new campaign, whatever your choices!

morganparker, I play the updated scen 001 against Jap AI.

I use a few house-rules to make the game more historical

1.Non-universal supply.
2.xAK ships cannot haul fuel in their cargo bays
3.Only F/FB/LB/DB aircraft can bomb in hexes, where both sides have their LCUs. This simulates CAS missions.
4.Bombing has to use safe release altitudes. Minimal release altitude for 250kg/500lb bomb is 2000 feet.

ad 1. This rules means that a given Allied nation needs to use supplies from the few defined supply pools:

-Brit/Indian/Burmese/New Zealand/Australian use Commonwealth supplies
-USN/USA/US Marines/Phil use US/Phil supplies
-China uses China supplies plus and US-made supplies that arrive in China
-Soviet use Soviet supplies
-Dutch use Dutch supplies

Think about rule 1 for a second.

I want to bring more supplies to Luzon to boost US units there. My closest source of US-made supplies is... Pearl Harbor, which at start has almost zero xAK/AK ships! If I want to reload CA Houston main guns with US-made supplies I can either do it in Manila or...Pearl Harbor. If I want to use the Ledo -China airbridge to boost China's supplies stock, I first need to bring US-made supplies to India etc.

As you can see, this totally slows the operational tempo for the Allies, and gives the Jap AI more breathing space.

Hope it helps.

RHS is insanely historical for its LCUs/bases/devices/aircraft. However, it has problems with the economy system - there is simply too much supply everywhere.

Every Allied country/group listed has US supplies to some extent or another.

Well, with time those groups get US devices through TOE upgrades (i.e.US tanks in Commonwealth units). Maybe Abadan auto-supplies are just invisible US Lend-Lease convoys dumping their cargo? Anyway, I love the complexity the house-rules give me. Resupplying Luzon in Dec 1941 is a major PITA.

Since the DEI was getting US supplies already, sending supplies (including food and medical stuff) from the DEI to the Philippines should not be a problem.

Well, in November 1941, MacArthur's ego completely obscured Luzon. The island was not on the map, I swear!
