SUGGESTION: another ZoC category

Post by SittingDuck »

I'd like to encourage the creation of another ZoC category in the editor. To provide more flexibility around the ZoC concept.

Hairog's 'Naval War' (and the work in some other mods) underscores how valuable it could be to have a 4th category (in this instance, for naval movement). Including another category would simply build in more functionality for unit type behavior.

In essence, add another category that allows for 'Penalty' and '# Units Required'.

Not sure what Hairog's "Naval War" is, but if it infers that there should be a one hex ZOC around a ship to prevent players from skirting around enemy ships, one hex at a time, to by pass them to get to AV's, transports, or CV's, then I agree. What is the point of screening your CV's if someone can air/sub recon a path around your surface ships to attack CV's with BB/CA's! At least a ship that has no remaining action points should limit the enemy from simply walking around them. Maybe an action point penalty for moving next to an enemy ship, or a "reaction", even if it can't inflict damage. Limited by the defending ship's readiness maybe? I.e. if the ship is "grey" then it doesn't inhibit the attacking player's moving around it.

Hi Havoc. Hairog's '1939 Naval War' is in the Community Pack for SC:WaW. There are, in fact, a few different year-start scenarios by him. Anything labeled 'Naval War'.

In fact, he upped the ZoC for most naval ships (and referred to them as task forces and other terms, denoting more than one ship). Naval ZoC moved, generally, to 6 action points. It radically changed some things. But the point being, naval movement and naval presence is just so different than land-based movement, that it requires some more capacity to experiment.

And another category would give us that capacity without wrecking the game. After all, the default setup for ZoC could be used.

I can add this to the list as well, but it would unfortunately be of low priority.
