Manual: Types of Attack

After a reasonably thorough perusal of the manual, I could not find any details on the different degrees of attack (probe etc.)
There is a reference to getting more info by mousing over the buttons on the UI but no explanations in the manual?
Obviously I understand the real life implications of each but would have been interesting to see how that translates in terms of the game engine.
